Woodbridge Township Council Addresses Redevelopment and Backyard Chicken Fees
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Woodbridge Township Council meeting, topics such as the adoption of redevelopment plans and the dramatic increase in backyard chicken permit fees were discussed. The meeting featured the honoring of local Senior Olympic athletes by Mayor John E. McCormac and the introduction of several development-related ordinances. Public comment highlighted community concerns over the rise in fees for chicken permits and the need to honor veterans.
The adoption of the Woodbridge Pero Redevelopment Plan marked a key topic of the council meeting, involving a partnership with a warehouse on Panoy land. This redevelopment strategy aims to stimulate economic growth and address local infrastructure. No significant public comments challenged the plan during the meeting. In addition to this, the council introduced the One Area 25 Redevelopment Plan without public opposition. These development initiatives reflect the council’s efforts to shape the town’s growth and address community needs through strategic planning.
However, it was the substantial increase in fees for backyard chicken permits that sparked notable public engagement. Resident Suzanne Reb Nikki Roland expressed her concerns about the fee hike from $35 to $75, questioning the justification behind the 114% increase. She highlighted the benefits of backyard chickens for sustainability and education and sought clarity on the fee allocation. Another resident, Richard Reb Nikki, supported her views by emphasizing the environmental benefits of keeping chickens. The council members responded to these concerns, assuring a review and justification of the new rates.
In a display of community spirit, the council and Mayor McCormac took a moment to honor local Senior Olympic athletes, recognizing their exemplary achievements in sports. The athletes received individual proclamations, and shared lighthearted moments with the officials.
Public comments also brought attention to the importance of Memorial Day, with Gary Dedeler speaking on the need to honor the sacrifices of veterans and protect the freedoms they have fought for. The council acknowledged the significance of the day and the contributions of veterans.
The discussion also celebrated the achievements of Woodbridge High School’s baseball team and their historic win.
Additionally, the meeting served as a platform for diverse community updates and announcements. Job opportunities for residents were highlighted through the Employment Opportunity Center, and cultural celebrations such as the upcoming Juneteenth event were mentioned, featuring food, music, and a bicycle giveaway.
The council vice president informed attendees about youth sports opportunities and provided an update on the My Way Army Corps of Engineers project aimed at resolving local drainage issues. The meeting also spotlighted local business openings, including a pizza place and a bagel shop, emphasizing the importance of supporting local enterprises.
Gratitude was expressed to various groups within the community, including first responders and teachers. Seasonal events such as a flea market, citizenship and ESL classes, and a troop rally were also on the agenda, along with the Chamber of Commerce’s annual street fair and the opening of vote by mail drop boxes.
In departmental updates, there were no major reports from legal and public works, and an executive session was postponed due to the absence of a required document.
