- Meeting Overview:
The Woodbridge Township Council convened to approve minutes and ordinances, address public concerns, and share community updates. Key points included the approval of handicap parking on Michael Court, the recognition of the Public Works Department’s snow removal efforts, and discussions on property tax and school construction funding. Members also celebrated sports achievements and announced upcoming events like a father-daughter dance and a women’s empowerment brunch.
The council meeting began with the approval of the minutes from February 6, 2024. The council approved the ordinances up to item 33, following which the floor was opened for public commentary.
A township resident took this opportunity to commend the Township Public workers for their prompt and effective snow removal during recent snowstorms. However, they also pointed to the potential dangers posed by the high speeds at which snowplows operate on Route 35. This concern was met with nods from the council, acknowledging the importance of safety in township operations. In the same vein, questions about property tax increments and the allocation of funds for school construction were raised. These matters reflect the community’s ongoing interest in fiscal responsibility and the quality of local education facilities.
The discussion then shifted to the achievements of the township’s sports teams, with the council expressing pride in the basketball and bowling teams’ success. This celebration of local talent provides a sense of community and encouragement for youth participation in sports.
Community events were a focal point, with announcements of a father-daughter dance and a women’s empowerment brunch.
Expressions of gratitude were extended to the Township’s emergency responders and public works employees. Their dedication and tireless efforts during the snowstorms did not go unnoticed, with Mayor John E. McCormac specifically commending the Public Works Department for their exceptional job in clearing the streets. The Mayor followed up with various administrative items, including addressing a tax overpayment, court tax appeals, and the establishment of professional service pools, which are essential for the efficient operation of the township.
Councilwoman Debbie Meehan spoke about the importance of community support, especially during the winter months when assistance for the food pantry is crucial. She also brought attention to a chili cook-off fundraising event for a third grader fighting leukemia.
Councilman Brian Small took the opportunity to announce the St. Patrick’s Day parade and associated festivities, including a Chamber of Commerce open house and events at the Wers Brewing Company. His call for the community to remember soldiers in their prayers added a touch of solemnity to the meeting.
Councilman Virbhadra N. Patel brought attention to cultural and educational events, such as the Woodbridge Public Library’s exhibition on local history and an art display aimed at mental health awareness. He also promoted the Independent Club of Colonia’s Black History Month celebration, where his contributions would be recognized, highlighting the council’s support for diversity and cultural awareness.
Council President Kyle Anderson praised the Heroes and Cool Kids program, which focuses on mentorship and tackles social issues such as substance abuse and sportsmanship. He also mentioned the planning for an updated community playground at Merl Park.
