- Meeting Overview:
The Woodbridge Township Council meeting highlighted concerns about the impact of new apartment developments on local schools and celebrated notable contributions by police officers. Discussions included urban development’s effects on infrastructure, traffic safety improvements, and community events. Recognitions were given to officers for life-saving actions, while council members addressed seasonal celebrations and ongoing municipal projects.
During the meeting, a resident raised concerns about the increase in traffic congestion attributed to new apartment developments and questioned the tracking of occupancy and its impact on the school system. The resident specifically inquired about any relationship between new apartment dwellers and the number of school-age children in the area, especially those impacting Rust Street School. In response, the mayor acknowledged the concerns and noted that he had previously reached out to the school board for data on the number of school-age children residing near Rust Street School. He mentioned that the school had been built with additional capacity, providing 150 more desks than currently needed. This suggested that the influx of students from new apartments might not be as significant as perceived. The mayor emphasized that any changes in school programs should not solely be attributed to new apartment developments.
The meeting also recognized outstanding contributions by police officers. Officer Russell Vanl, who has served three years in the Radio Patrol Division, was honored for his actions during the third quarter of 2024. Notably, on July 9, he provided emergency medical assistance at the Mayor’s summer concert, helping to revive a concert-goer who had suffered a seizure. Additionally, on October 1, he located and successfully apprehended the driver of a stolen vehicle. Officer Vanl, acknowledging the team efforts involved, stated, āit’s always a team effort… itās never a one-man show.ā Similarly, Officer Angel Martinez was recognized for his life-saving actions on August 26, when he and his partner provided emergency medical treatment to a severely injured individual. Officer Martinez also highlighted the importance of teamwork, stating, āit is a team effort… working together you can get things done correctly.ā
Following the recognition of these officers, Police Director Bob Hubner expressed gratitude for acknowledging the hard work of the police force. He praised the officers for setting a high standard for service. Council members also expressed their appreciation for the efforts of first responders, especially as the Thanksgiving holiday approached.
Traffic and road safety improvements were also discussed, with a speaker noting that traffic conditions in the township were improving due to better traffic light systems. Particular mention was made of Main Street, which had transitioned from challenging conditions to a more navigable roadway. The speaker raised questions about potential expansion plans for Main Street to manage increased traffic, noting the high costs associated with widening roads. Concerns about the township’s crime rates were also discussed, with requests for updates on statistics related to drug issues or robberies. The speaker expressed confidence in the police department’s ability to manage crime effectively.
Community events were another focal point of the meeting. The Council Vice President reported on the successful Avanel Merry Holiday Lighting event, where over a thousand attendees participated. The event was a tribute to Hank from Avau Pharmacy, with his family present to switch on the lights. Emphasizing community support during the holiday season, council members encouraged attendees to remember those less fortunate. Additional announcements included seasonal events at the community center, such as ice skating with Santa, a holiday-themed Zumba class, and CPR training for township employees. Details were shared about the fourth annual Turkey Trot, with some proceeds benefiting the Marissa Taro Foundation.
Further community events included the upcoming Holiday Stroll on December 7, featuring entertainment, food vendors, and a tree lighting ceremony. A successful Thanksgiving food drive was also highlighted, which provided meals to over 300 families. Council members encouraged the community to maintain a giving spirit throughout the year.
