Woodbridge Township Council Withdraws Support for Cannabis Dispensary Amid Celebrations and Community Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Woodbridge Township Council meeting was marked by the council’s decision to withdraw support for MadHatter dispensaries, citing non-compliance with their redevelopment agreement, alongside spirited community celebrations and discussions on immigration issues. The meeting also saw a detailed celebration of local youth soccer achievements and community events.
One notable issue discussed at the meeting was the resolution to withdraw local support for MadHatter dispensaries’ operation of a class 5 retail cannabis business. A council member advocated strongly for this resolution, highlighting the dispensary’s failure to demolish an adult variety center as required by their redevelopment agreement. The council member emphasized the negative impact of the dispensary’s actions and described the situation as having “sold a broken box of rocks.” The motion to withdraw support was passed without dissent.
In addition to this significant decision, the council meeting was a celebration of local youth soccer teams. The Colonia Cosmos, Colonia Galaxy, and Woodbridge Wildcats were recognized for their outstanding achievements. The Colonia Cosmos were celebrated for winning the Mid New Jersey Flight Division and the Branchburg Fall Classic tournament with an undefeated record. Players expressed their gratitude and shared insights about their season.
The Colonia Galaxy also received recognition for their victory in the President’s Cup. Players shared their favorite soccer players and what it meant to be part of the team, while coaches expressed appreciation for the support from players and parents. The Woodbridge Wildcats were recognized for being the first Woodbridge team to win a New Jersey Youth Soccer State Cup championship, boasting an undefeated season.
Public comments during the meeting also brought attention to immigration issues, with calls for the council to support the Immigrant Trust Act. Ellen Wit, a volunteer focused on deportation and immigration response, recounted the impacts of a recent ICE raid that affected many local families. Wit argued for the Immigrant Trust Act to prevent local government agencies from cooperating with ICE. Despite the council’s clarification that the raid did not occur under their jurisdiction, the discussion highlighted the community’s concern for immigrant families and the need for supportive legislation.
The council meeting continued with a focus on various community events and achievements. Announcements included upcoming holiday events such as the Woodbridge Holiday Parade and a menorah lighting ceremony. Council members promoted local businesses and encouraged community participation in events like the “buy local shop small weekend” and the “Cookies and Cans” gathering, aimed at collecting food and supplies for those in need.
Acknowledgments were given to individuals and groups contributing to the community, including RJ Wartman, a student athlete from Colonia High School, for securing a football scholarship to Rutgers University. Council members also congratulated local businesses on their recent grand openings and promoted holiday-themed events, such as the “Rock This Town Orchestra Christmas Spectacular.”
The meeting concluded with the council members expressing gratitude for community support and participation in various initiatives. Councilman Harris thanked voters for his election to a two-year term and highlighted the success of the Woodbridge Turkey Trot 5K Walk, which raised funds for a local foundation supporting children. Councilman Mitch read a letter from the family of former mayor Joseph D. Marino, expressing gratitude for a memorial park dedicated in his honor, which was met with appreciation from the council.
