- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Woodbridge Township Council meeting, plans for the upcoming Veterans Day Parade were highlighted, with Jeff and Nancy Mullins, alongside their service dog Zoe, announced as the grand marshals for the event. The parade, scheduled for November 10th, aims to honor the sacrifices of veterans and raise awareness of the support systems available to them. The Mullins shared their personal experiences, shedding light on the challenges faced by military families and the significant impact of community support and service dogs in veterans’ lives.
Jeff Mullins detailed his extensive military service history, which began in 1977 when he joined the Navy as a member of the Construction Battalion. His career path led him to the medical field and eventually back to military service with the National Guard. He recounted his deployment experiences, including significant mobilizations in Baghdad and Afghanistan. Nancy Mullins offered insights into the hardships endured by military families, often balancing multiple jobs to maintain financial stability during her husband’s deployments. She emphasized the important role of community support in helping families navigate such periods.
The Mullins’ involvement with Rebuilding Warriors, an organization that provides service dogs to veterans and first responders, was also discussed. Jeff Mullins explained how he became involved with the organization through a childhood friend who founded it. The organization has placed 164 dogs to date, each contributing to the well-being of veterans and their families. A notable story was shared of a widow who, after losing her husband to suicide due to PTSD, donated funds to support the acquisition of a service dog for another veteran. The impact of these dogs was highlighted by a veteran who described his first restful sleep in two decades after receiving a service dog.
Further attention was drawn to the contributions of the Woodbridge Township Veterans Alliance. The head of the alliance shared his military background and advocacy work for veterans, focusing on efforts to increase benefits and support services. The alliance is dedicated to addressing veteran homelessness in New Jersey, with an estimated 1,900 veterans currently without homes. Working towards zero homelessness remains one of their key objectives.
The council also discussed the parade route, starting from Ross Street School and proceeding to Town Hall, with participation expected from various veterans’ organizations. The event is anticipated to draw community involvement, highlighting public appreciation for veterans’ sacrifices. The enthusiasm for the parade reflects the growing support and recognition for veterans within the community, with collaborative efforts between local government and veterans’ organizations further enhancing available support services.
