Woodbridge Township Honors Veterans with New Housing Initiative and Key to the City Ceremony
- Meeting Overview:
In a meeting held at the Maple Tree Senior Center, Woodbridge Township Council and community members gathered to honor veterans with a series of recognitions and announcements, including a new housing initiative for veterans and the presentation of a key to the city to Jeff and Nancy Mullins of Rebuilding Warriors.
The event’s highlight was the announcement of a new housing initiative connected to the Greens at Avenel project. This initiative aims to provide affordable housing and support services for veterans and their families, with construction expected to commence early next year.
Adding to the importance of the meeting was the recognition of Jeff and Nancy Mullins for their work with Rebuilding Warriors. This organization provides service dogs to veterans dealing with PTSD and other challenges, a cause that resonated deeply with the council and attendees. A young veteran shared his emotional story of receiving a service dog, noting it was the first time in years he had a good night’s sleep. The council presented the Mullins with a key to Woodbridge Township, a rare honor that underscored the impact of their contributions to the community and veterans nationwide.
Jeff Mullins spoke about the journey of Rebuilding Warriors, which started after a class reunion led to his involvement with the organization. He emphasized the importance of understanding veterans’ challenges and highlighted that all funds raised go directly toward placing dogs with veterans and first responders.
The meeting also featured the revival of the Veterans Alliance in Woodbridge Township, which had been inactive for many years. The mayor credited a community member for revitalizing the group, which led to organizing a veterans’ parade. Scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM on Sunday from Ros Street School, the parade aims to honor veterans and encourage community support. Additional events were announced, including a Veterans Day service at local American Legion posts and a combined job and health fair on November 14 at the senior center, offering medical screenings and assistance with VA claims.
Recognition continued with acknowledgments of some of the township’s oldest veterans, including Phil Sabota, a 102-year-old World War II veteran, and Mike Valo, who served as a bombardier and is soon to celebrate his 100th birthday. Greg Karakus, another centenarian veteran, was noted for his participation in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.
The meeting concluded with the presentation of certificates to numerous veterans, with the mayor calling out names and encouraging veterans to acknowledge their service. The atmosphere was one of respect and celebration, focusing on the veterans’ sacrifices and the township’s ongoing support.
