- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Yarmouth Economic Development Committee meeting, the discussion of a $250,000 grant request by the IT department to improve the town’s fiber connectivity infrastructure for public safety emerged as a significant item. The grant, aimed at replacing the existing inet infrastructure serviced by Comcast fiber, prompted debate over the potential public safety risks should the remaining strands be compromised. The committee voted to support the grant application, proposing up to a 5% match for the project.
The focus on public safety and infrastructure was echoed in the recap of the Economic Development Summit, where the necessity of completing the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy was linked to the importance of infrastructure improvements, particularly in relation to the town’s bridges. The summit highlighted the need for federal funding for bridge projects, emphasizing the repercussions of not acquiring the necessary financial support. Workforce development was also discussed as a key component in fostering a sustainable community in Yarmouth.
Further discussions in the meeting revolved around the vacant storefront and facade improvement program. Committee members deliberated on whether to apply for a state program or establish a local initiative. Concerns about the capacity of town staff to administer such a program were raised, and the suggestion of a pilot program to start small was put forward. The committee agreed on the necessity of further information and input from the Town Administrator, Robert L. Whritenour, before reaching a decision.
The committee also tackled the categorization of town events into community and economic development events, proposing criteria for each to assess their community engagement and economic impact. This led to a debate on funding allocation priorities for these events.
In terms of economic development, the meeting featured discussions on enhancing the special events program, improving wayfinding, boosting the town’s website presence, and exploring opportunities along the Route 28 Corridor. The ongoing work with Mass development resources was also reviewed, with specific focus areas including Packet Landing and Grace Beach.
The potential for consolidating pickleball courts to support sanctioned events was brought up, but the feasibility of this initiative was questioned in light of ongoing field discussions and the community’s evolving needs. Plans for Packet Landing were further elaborated, with proposals for installing outdoor solar charging stations and reconfiguring benches to create an amphitheater-like setting. The introduction of oyster upwellers and educational programming for children were also discussed as part of the Packet Landing enhancements.
The meeting also addressed the Mass Leads Act and the economic development bill, noting the bill’s progress through the legislative process and the potential need for submitting testimony during committee hearings should any issues arise.
Updates on the Wastewater project were provided, including the groundbreaking event, contract awards, and the importance of communicating with the town regarding the Water Resources Reclamation Facility. The recent parade’s success, which was live-streamed, was acknowledged, with a nod to the sponsors’ financial contributions.
