Stuart Commissions Infrastructure Project with $130.5 Million Grant

Overview: In a development for the City of Stuart, the City Commission meeting centered around the approval of a substantial U.S. Department of Transportation National Infrastructure Assistance Mega grant amounting to $130.5 million. This grant, which represents 60% of the estimated $218 million project budget, is earmarked for the replacement of the St. Lucy River Railroad Bridge, a vital infrastructure initiative aimed at elevating the bridge to facilitate boat passage and alleviate train staging at intersections. The city, as the lead applicant, will manage these funds in partnership with the Florida Inland Navigation District, Brightline Trains Florida LLC, and the Florida East Coast Railway. The grant is complemented by additional funding sources, including a Federal Grant from the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI), a state of Florida Strategic Intermodal System Fund Grant, and Brightline’s contribution, totaling over $87 million. The City of Stuart has also committed $250,000 in-kind towards the project.
