- Meeting Overview:
The recent Zumbrota City Council meeting focused on several initiatives, including the approval of a snow removal reimbursement agreement and the re-election of key officials. The council passed a resolution to secure reimbursements for snow plowing costs on state highways and celebrated the re-election of Mayor Todd Hammel and a council member. The meeting also covered updates on local infrastructure projects, community fundraising efforts, and the city’s recognition as a well-managed municipality.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the approval of resolution 2024-36, which secures reimbursement for snow removal costs incurred by the city on state highways. This agreement, facilitated by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, extends through June 2029. The resolution was passed unanimously with a roll call vote, reflecting full support from the council members present. This agreement will provide financial relief to Zumbrota by offsetting the expenses associated with maintaining clear and safe roads during the winter months.
The council also discussed the Northwest Water Main Loop project, with updates provided on its progress. The installation of the water main is advancing well, aided by favorable weather conditions. However, some minor issues were identified, such as settlement under a county road that the contractor needs to address. The council considered streamlining the approval process for pay requests related to this and other projects.
Infrastructure improvements were another focal point of discussion, particularly concerning Ninth Street. The project is nearing completion and has transformed the area significantly. The paving of Mill and Sixth Streets before the school year has improved traffic flow, especially around the high school. However, concerns were raised about the visibility of a stop sign on Ninth Street, which poses a challenge for drivers, particularly during school hours. The council noted that this issue needs to be addressed with the relevant authorities to ensure road safety.
In the election report, over 2,300 voters participated in the recent election, which was organized by election judges under Miranda’s oversight. Minor issues were noted but did not impact the overall smooth conduct of the election. The council plans to hold a canvassing meeting to review the election results. The meeting acknowledged the re-election of Mayor Todd Hammel and congratulated a council member for their continued service. Additionally, a farewell was extended to Sarah, who has served on the council for an extended period.
The council also discussed ongoing fundraising efforts for a community pool. Letters have been sent to local businesses to solicit support, and council members plan to engage with businesses directly. A local organization, referred to as BFW, is hosting a fundraiser event with tickets available for purchase. The pool design is progressing, with soil engineering work commencing soon, and finalized plans are anticipated over the winter.
Other updates included the anticipated arrival of a new speed trailer for the police department. The logistics of receiving the trailer were discussed, emphasizing the need for a forklift to assist in unloading. Additionally, the Economic Development Authority has approved $5,000 for the creation of new visitor guides, which will be distributed statewide by February as part of the city’s advertising efforts.
The meeting also highlighted a vandalism incident involving newly replaced sidewalks. A portion of the sidewalk was damaged, prompting collaboration between public works staff to address the issue. Efforts to remedy the situation are ongoing.
In terms of financial support, a grant of $25,000 was received from the Taylor Family Farm Foundation to assist in the purchase of turnout gear for the fire department. This funding will alleviate the financial burden on the city, contributing to the total cost of $100,000 for this essential equipment.
Lastly, copies of an article from Business View Magazine were distributed, recognizing Zumbrota as one of the best-managed cities with a population under 10,000. The council was encouraged to share the article to enhance the city’s image and outreach efforts.
