- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Zumbrota Economic Development Authority (EDA) meeting, discussions focused on escalating costs for promotional materials and strategic business development initiatives in the area.
The board engaged in a conversation regarding the Visitor Guide, a longstanding promotional tool for Zumbrota. The cost of producing this guide has increased from $4,400 to $5,800, a rise attributed to higher production expenses. This prompted a debate about how to manage these costs within the EDA’s existing budget, with $2,500 specifically allocated for advertising. Members expressed concerns over the lack of detailed pricing information from the supplier, questioning the feasibility of alternative printing options to mitigate expenses. A motion was passed to approve spending up to $5,000 for 5,000 copies of the guide, provided negotiations could continue to explore cost-saving measures.
The conversation then shifted to a proposal for advertising in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ in-stadium magazine. The offer was a half-page advertisement priced at $4,000, reduced from the initial $7,500. This sparked a debate over the potential return on investment, with some members expressing skepticism about the advertisement’s effectiveness in reaching the intended audience. The package included four game tickets, which led to suggestions of using them for community events or fundraisers. The decision on the Timberwolves advertisement was postponed.
Attention was also given to new business proposals, including the production of a yearbook-style “souvenir publication” aimed at attracting tourists. The board underscored the importance of crafting professional promotional materials and considered deferring this decision to explore more sophisticated marketing strategies.
In terms of business support, the EDA examined the low interest in small business loans, with only two inquiries noted. Members acknowledged the challenge posed by the complex six-page loan guidelines, which could deter potential applicants. A simplified version of these guidelines was proposed, including a FAQ section to enhance accessibility and understanding. The board discussed the possibility of removing loan amount limits to accommodate diverse business needs, aligning with previous discussions on flexible funding.
Updates on local enterprises were also provided. The Keller Bartman Apartments had received a grant, but parking arrangements remained a concern, particularly the reliance on a public lot used by local businesses. The relocation of Greenstead to a new venue, where they plan to open a café, was seen positively, signaling growth in the area’s commercial landscape. Additionally, the potential opening of a new Mexican restaurant was discussed, with licensing restrictions potentially impacting its offerings.
Lastly, the meeting touched upon the prospective development of a veterinary clinic on Highway 58. An architectural firm showed interest in constructing the facility, which would cater to large animals, emphasizing the location’s strategic visibility.
