- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Zumbrota Park Board meeting, members grappled with the dual challenges of securing necessary funds for the local pool renovation and addressing pressing safety concerns. The primary focus was on the substantial fundraising efforts required to meet Burback Aquatics’ stipulation that 90% of the project’s estimated cost be secured before proceeding with the bidding process. Current funding stands at around 70%, signaling the need for intensified efforts to bridge the gap to the $1.6 million goal.
The board detailed ongoing fundraising initiatives, including the upcoming Donnie Frank Day scheduled for November 30th. This event promises to be a major contributor, featuring the sale of 400 raffle tickets at $50 each, with proceeds benefiting the swimming pool fund. Additional fundraising activities include smaller raffles, a silent auction, and the innovative sale of engraved brick pavers for a future patio. These bricks, offered by Brick Markers USA, can be customized with names or logos, and are available for order both online and at community events.
Significant contributions have been made, notably a $100,000 donation from the Hansen Family with Telephone Company, which was matched by other donors, cumulatively raising approximately $375,000. Despite this progress, board members expressed concern over the pace of fundraising, given the financial requirements set forth.
Safety concerns regarding the pool’s current facilities were also a notable topic. Inspection standards are not being met due to plumbing issues in the changing and shower rooms, raising urgent compliance questions, especially regarding ADA requirements necessitating a lift installation. The board discussed a previously considered $3 million renovation plan, which would address these infrastructure deficiencies, but financial constraints and funding shortfalls complicate immediate action.
The board explored various strategies to expedite fundraising, including reaching out to local businesses and townships—Zima, Rasco, and Minola—for financial support, as residents from these areas frequently use the pool. The involvement of Mayor Todd Hammel in preparing a list of potential business contacts was noted, and there was mention of interest from financial advisers in contributing IRA funds to the project.
Despite these efforts, concerns about the project’s scope and timeline were raised. A member questioned why the bathhouse cost was estimated at $900,000, higher than average costs in the Midwest. Deliberations included the possibility of modifying plans based on community feedback and financial realities, though there was a strong emphasis on maintaining the original vision approved via the bond vote.
In other discussions, the board unanimously supported the construction of a Little Free Library at a designated site, an initiative that received no objections. Additionally, the potential installation of electric vehicle charging stations, specifically Tesla superchargers, was entertained, with consideration given to IRS grants that could aid funding.
The meeting closed with board members emphasizing the necessity for regular, structured financial updates, particularly for the pool project. The importance of transparency was underlined, with calls for monthly financial reports to keep the committee and public informed of donation totals and ongoing needs.
