- Meeting Overview:
In a recent convening of the Boston Entertainment Application Board, the application of Reggie Rondo LLC, operating as Small Victories, took center stage as they sought approval to introduce a variety of entertainment options at their new venue in Andrew Square. The proposal included plans for audio devices, televisions, automatic amusement devices, and a DJ service until 2 am. While the venue aims to be a community-driven establishment, the meeting highlighted a division of opinion among local representatives, community members, and officials.
Small Victories, described as an extension of the existing establishment The Quiet Few, is envisioned to promote a neighborhood tavern concept, focusing on non-live entertainment such as TV, background music, and trivia nights. The owner, Josh Weinstein, and representative, Kristen Scanland, presented the proposal to the board, noting that the venue would typically close at 1 am, with the 2 am closing reserved for special occasions. They assured that live entertainment would end by 1 am and plans for weekend brunch DJ entertainment and trivia nights.
During the discussion, the executive director of the Mayor’s Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing and the director of operations posed questions regarding the venue’s concept, seating capacity, soundproofing, security measures, and the demographic they aimed to attract. The applicant’s representative provided comprehensive responses. In particular, they acknowledged the community’s issues with the 2 am closing time and expressed willingness to cease live entertainment by 1 am.
Gabriel Ramirez from Councilor Gabriela Kaleta’s office offered a positive character reference for the applicant, citing their good standing in the community. Lydia Plasy from the Office of Neighborhood Services also pointed to the Andrew Square Civic Association’s support and the proponent’s positive track record. Several residents echoed this sentiment, presenting the potential for a positive neighborhood impact.
Conversely, Senator Nick Collins of South Boston stood in opposition to the proposal, specifically taking issue with the idea of a DJ playing until 2 am and the inclusion of video games. Collins also voiced concerns about the involvement of individuals from outside the district in the decision-making process. A resident named John Potosi argued for a deferred decision, citing insufficient community awareness about the establishment’s plans.
The board acknowledged the varied perspectives presented during the meeting, with testimonies reflecting both support and opposition from the local community.
