- Meeting Overview:
At the recent meeting of the Ocean (Monmouth County) Shade Tree Commission, members reached a notable decision to deny a request for the removal of two sweet gum trees, highlighting the meeting’s focus on tree preservation and management. Instead of removal, the commission provided suggestions for addressing the trees’ structural issues to the homeowners.
The commission also agreed on the removal of three declining Norway Maples on Bendir Street due to their hazardous condition. The trees posed potential trip and fall hazards, leading to unanimous consent for their removal. However, the commission faced limitations when discussing replanting options due to utility lines. Additionally, the removal of a sweetgum tree was approved because it was deemed the wrong species for its location and posed a hazard due to its surface roots affecting water levels and walkways.
The condition of a tree on Park View was discussed, which showed signs of a necrotic root system and decay. The commission decided to remove it due to the risk of failure at grade.
They reviewed the Community Forestry Management Plan and the need for an updated plan that complies with state requirements. The estimates for tree removal costs and in-kind hours were deliberated, with a call for further review and comments on the plans to close the grant.
In terms of budgeting, the commission considered the need for up to $50,000, anticipating 25% in-kind contributions, translating to roughly 400 man hours. The actual expenditure was reported to be 80-85% of the expected amount. This fiscal responsibility was a key aspect of the meeting’s discussions.
Training for tree keepers was addressed. The commission talked about the importance of closing the current grant before applying for new ones, such as one for a tree survey. The necessity to stay updated with state ordinances and webinars related to new tree management regulations was emphasized.
Furthermore, the commission reviewed existing tree protection and land use ordinances, contemplating a tree planning guide to enhance the town’s tree population. The discussion included considerations for committee leadership and membership. There was also a debate on the integration of tree-related elements into the general noise ordinance.
The meeting concluded with a focus on community outreach, highlighting the commission’s dedication to involving the public in tree management and preservation efforts. Audience members were invited to provide final comments, solidifying the commission’s engagement with the community’s concerns and insights on tree-related issues.
