Roselle Park School Board Presents Preliminary 2024-2025 Budget
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Roselle Park School Board meeting, a preliminary budget for the 2024-2025 school year garnered attention. The presented budget outlines expenditures, revenues, and the impact of various programs and services on the community’s tax levy. The budget reflects an increase in local taxes and anticipates substantial state and federal contributions.
The budget presentation highlighted a total anticipated revenue of over $56 million. Local taxes are set to increase by $443,000, equating to a 1.87% rise. For the average homeowner in Roselle Park, assessed at $253,000, this translates to an annual tax increase of $111.
Regular programs, health benefits, administration, transportation, and operations and facilities were also addressed, with health benefits comprising 20% of the budget at a little over $10 million.
The budget workshop discussed the expansion of the district’s preschool program, with the addition of two to three new classes expected by September, resulting in a total of 13 classes. Updates to K-12 mathematics and English Language Arts programs, foundational literacy, and continued emphasis on social-emotional learning are also planned. Special education initiatives include the expansion of the n2y unique curriculum to all self-contained classrooms, the exploration of hiring a flow-in district nurse, and the development of a community-based instruction program with assistance from Rutgers and the Boggs Center.
Public input was sought regarding the budget, and several community members spoke during the public participation segment. Topics of interest included enthusiastic support for the addition of a district nurse, the potential for community-based instruction, the need for enhanced translation services, and concerns about retaining high-quality staff in the district. The discussion also touched upon the extended school year program and the importance of adequately compensating paraprofessionals and related service professionals.
