- Meeting Overview:
The Upper Township Council meeting on a recent date was marked by the recognition of the Upper Township Basketball Association’s eighth-grade boys team for their championship win, the introduction of ordinances on the sale of undersized lots and public right of way regulations, discussions about a proposed hotel and traffic concerns, and concerns raised over drone activity in the area.
A notable moment from the meeting was the celebration of the local eighth-grade boys basketball team, who were honored for their achievement as the 2024 Southshore Basketball League champions. The team’s success brought pride to the community, and their recognition was a reflection of the township’s support for youth programs and local sports.
The council introduced two important ordinances. The first, ordinance number 7 of 2024, addressed the sale of small, undersized lots that are surrounded by properties owned by the same individual, exempting them from public bidding requirements. The second, ordinance number 8 of 2024, proposed adding a new chapter to the town’s code concerning the regulation of public streets, highways, right of ways, and other public spaces. Both ordinances were slated for a public hearing and the possibility of final adoption on May 13th.
Public comments opened a discussion about a proposed hotel in the Seaville section of the township, with resident Blanch Adams inquiring about the status and related traffic studies, as well as the pursuit of Exit 20. The council addressed these concerns by detailing their efforts to secure funding and the challenges faced in the pursuit of Exit 20. They emphasized the importance of public support and involvement in advocacy for the project, highlighting the council’s responsiveness to community inquiries and the complexities involved in local development projects.
During the meeting, concerns about drone activity were brought to the forefront, with reports of a large drone buzzing houses in the area. This issue was flagged as a potential safety and privacy concern, with a recommendation for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to be contacted in such situations.
Updates on various community events and initiatives were also shared, including the difficulty of achieving wellness certificates and the distracted driver awareness campaign, where the community was urged to avoid using phones while driving.
Additional updates covered the Township’s paving program, water pump project, and living shoreline project. The consent agenda was approved without the need for separating items for individual consideration.
The meeting concluded with a motion to enter into a closed session to discuss personnel matters, contract negotiations, potential litigation, and IT services, with the estimated time and circumstances for disclosure outlined.
The Deputy Mayor also announced an upcoming shredding event hosted by the Green Team. Additionally, the National Day of Prayer ceremony was highlighted, scheduled for Thursday, May 2nd, 2024.
