The Hillside School Board has approved a $75 million operating budget for the upcoming year without raising the local tax levy. These funds are earmarked for targeted interventions for students with disabilities, academic support, professional development, ESL and bilingual student programs, and technology infrastructure improvements.
In line with the district’s priorities, the board emphasized strengthening academics, enhancing school safety, achieving operational excellence, maintaining an engaged workforce, and nurturing partnerships. The continuation of summer programs is assured, along with investments in STEM and music programs. Support for language and math education, design and construction programs, dual enrollment opportunities, and the Esports Academy were also highlighted. Plans for investing in the African-American studies program, supporting various clubs, and strengthening science education through partnerships with institutes like Stevens Institute and the Liberty Science Center were laid out. Additionally, there was mention of expanding the IDE Bal program and reassessing security systems and V dat.
To further support students’ mental health needs, the district has invested in additional social workers, with two New Jersey Department of Education grants focused on mental health support. The expansion of De G teller Academy is expected to be underway with a modular structure set to be in place by the first week of June. The meeting also unveiled plans for creating outdoor learning spaces and improving the footprint of school areas. There was a mention of the preliminary drafts for Ola Edwards as a space for both students, staff, and the community. The need to meet the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance work at the high school and ination Academy was addressed, as well as upgrades to the food serving lines and the addition of two new school buses. Upgrades to the TV Production Studio, track resurfacing, and the bleachers at the school are also planned. The board plans to upgrade the center courtyard at AP Morris, network upgrades, cybersecurity upgrades, and maintenance work.
The meeting included a discussion about the need for more science teachers and the ongoing partnership with the national teacher network. The superintendent presented the final budget for the school year 2024-2025.
During the public comments portion of the meeting, a resident inquired about the detailed budget’s availability and the presentation on the website. The superintendent assured that the detailed budget would be made available after being published in the newspaper and commended the board members for their support. The board then voted to adopt the final budget, expressing condolences to the superintendent for his recent loss. He thanked the board for their support and expressed appreciation for the work being done to benefit the students. The superintendent acknowledged the upcoming Teacher Appreciation Week and emphasized the importance of appreciating teachers for their contributions to students’ success.
