Littleton’s Tennis Court Reconfiguration Takes Center Stage at Parks Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Littleton Park and Recreation Commission meeting on May 13, 2024, focused on the reconfiguration of tennis courts, high demand for camp programs, the Rock Garden project’s future, and potential construction of a public restroom facility. The commission also discussed the successful implementation of the voting clicker system, the Touch-A-Truck event, and updates on the Frog Pond SL Wastewater management area cleanup.
The reconfiguration of the tennis courts emerged as an issue. The project requires a different design and land survey due to the temperature sensitivity of certain aspects of the project. The timeline for completion involves potential work during the fall and winter months. This project’s importance was underscored by the need to address the growing interest in tennis and to ensure the facilities meet community standards.
Another topic was the Camp program’s success, which had sold out nearly all available spots by the end of April. This unprecedented demand led to discussions about increasing the program’s capacity and seeking additional space at local schools. The commission considered rearranging space at the current location or utilizing Russell Street or the Middle School. The acquisition of a school bus was also explored as a means to facilitate transportation for the increased number of campers.
The Rock Garden project was revisited with a focus on repurposing the area, given that it had not been utilized as originally intended over the past two years. The commission proposed installing hexagonal pavilions in the space and involving the original contributors, including a Girl Scout Troop, in the decision-making process.
Staff management processes were addressed, with the upcoming annual staff evaluations and the introduction of the PerformYard system to streamline evaluations and goal setting. The commission underscored the system’s potential to provide flexibility and ease in managing staff performance. Additionally, the meeting covered staff training for summer seasonal staff, involving approximately 80 individuals, and emphasized the positive energy surrounding the training sessions.
The potential construction of a public restroom facility was debated, considering factors such as water availability, maintenance, and the need for additional staff. Discussions on trash management and vandalism highlighted the challenges of maintaining cleanliness and security in public areas. The “pack in, pack out” concept’s effectiveness was questioned as a potential solution to these issues.
The meeting also noted the success of various articles at town meeting, including the approval of the fiscal year 2025 operating budget and funds for the King Street renovation. However, a request to sell portions of the orchard failed to pass, missing the required 2/3 vote by a small margin. The use of voting clickers at the town meeting was hailed as a positive and efficient experience.
In addition to the main topics, the commission discussed the cleanup of the Frog Pond SL Wastewater management area and the well-attended Touch-A-Truck event. The location and timing of the Third Thursday event were debated, with the decision likely reverting to a previous location due to wet conditions. The commission also acknowledged a donation to the Youth scholarship fund and a presentation by the Sudbury Valley Trust regarding land protection.
