- Meeting Overview:
In a development at the Norton Select Board meeting on May 23rd, 2024, a new member was appointed to the school committee following presentations by three candidates. The chosen candidate, who will serve a one-year term, was selected after a discussion that examined the qualifications and experiences of each applicant. This appointment was a focal point of the meeting.
The three candidates for the school committee appointment brought a diverse array of experiences to their presentations. One candidate, Lori, with 18 years of experience as a public school teacher and active involvement in the Swansea Educators Association, positioned herself as a seasoned educator deeply invested in the academic community. The third candidate’s presentation focused on a track record of 9 years on the school committee, emphasizing established leadership within the committee’s operations. The board’s ensuing discussion revolved around the decision-making process, considering the candidates’ attributes before proceeding to a vote that culminated in the appointment.
In addition to the school committee appointment, the Select Board addressed several other agenda items. The appointment of Jared Ferrara from the highway department as a representative to the Joint Transportation Planning Group was confirmed, with Mike Yunits designated as the alternate. Furthermore, a change was made to the Recreation Commission, transitioning Frank Durant from a permanent member to an alternate status.
The entrepreneurial spirit within the community was ignited as the board approved the Mobile Food Truck vendor application for FJ Burgers LLC, operating as Fat Johnny’s Burgers. The plan, presented by John Har, assistant superintendent of the water and sewer department, was positively received. This approval marked a step forward in diversifying local food service offerings.
Acknowledging inclusivity and diversity, the Select Board took a moment to read a proclamation officially recognizing June 2024 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Norton.
The board announced a virtual community outreach meeting for a proposed adult-use marijuana product manufacturing establishment.
The Select Board also deliberated on the town’s operational matters, including scheduling meetings for the summer months. Considerations for holidays and the availability of individuals were central to the discussions, with a suggestion to defer finalizing the schedule until after any pending elections. Contracts and logistics also figured prominently, with the board approving a paper contract with WB Mason that offered significant price reductions. Logistics for the town meeting and a special town election were reviewed.
The meeting also touched upon the town’s exercise of the right of first refusal for horticultural recreational use on a parcel of land, a point that required clarification and re-voting on the motions.
In a nod to community contributions, the board recognized the VFW for their donation of a flag and stand to the Housing Authority. Moreover, the acknowledgment of a grant received by the town manager to assist with utility bills highlighted the ongoing efforts to support residents in managing living costs.
The meeting concluded with an adjournment motion and a light-hearted acknowledgment of a late arrival.
