- Meeting Overview:
In a development from the latest Southwick Park and Recreation Commission meeting, plans for a new spray park at Wally Park were discussed, with construction expected to commence soon. This new recreational feature is anticipated to enhance the community’s leisure offerings. Additionally, the Commission tackled preparations for the upcoming Motocross event on June 29, highlighting the need for volunteers and efficient organization to manage the influx of visitors and vehicles.
The spray park, a much-anticipated project, is underway with Arrow Concrete scheduled to install the necessary underground control systems. Although a completion timeline was not provided, the conversation suggested about a month’s worth of work to finish the installation. The Commission noted that the spray park is a frequent topic among community members, reflecting considerable local interest.
Preparations for the Motocross event were also on the agenda, with discussions on the need for volunteers to assist with various tasks, including parking and collecting money. The importance of adequate staffing was underscored to ensure smooth traffic flow and adherence to parking arrangements. Members shared experiences from previous years, emphasizing the challenges faced when directing attendees and the potential for improved coordination this year.
Other topics of note included ongoing maintenance and updates for Wally Park, inquiries about pickleball facilities, and vandalism issues at the rail trail, where damage to porta potty locks was reported. The Commission discussed the possibility of replacing a vandalized shed at the softball fields if funds are available from the vandalism account before the end of the fiscal year.
The meeting also acknowledged the departure of a long-time Commission member, expressing appreciation for her contributions. Additionally, new member Dan Welsh was welcomed aboard, bringing with him extensive experience in sports and community service from neighboring Westfield.
In procedural matters, David DeiDolori was motioned to serve as the permanent chairman of the Commission, and a representative to the Community Preservation Committee was appointed. The meeting concluded with a reminder about the town beach opening on June 21st.
