Woodbridge Township Advances Support for Special Needs Adults
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Woodbridge Township Council meeting, the council adopted an ordinance for the lease of a property on East Smith Street, intended for a facility to support special needs adults. Additionally, the council approved a resolution to execute a memorandum of agreement with local 3044 for a labor contract and discussed a variety of community concerns and initiatives, including emergency preparedness, train traffic safety, and local redevelopment projects.
The leasing of the property on East Smith Street was a focal point of the meeting, with the council addressing the importance of providing facilities for adults with special needs. The facility is expected to enhance the services and support available in the township. The public hearing on this ordinance was brief, with no opposition from the residents, leading to its swift adoption.
The meeting also encompassed a variety of community-related discussions. Residents engaged with the council during the public comment portion, raising concerns about emergency preparedness and inquiring whether the township had designated safety areas in case of emergencies. Another resident brought up the issue of train safety, questioning the number of cars allowed to pull behind a train and the implications for speed and volume of train traffic.
The status of the Casby fire department redevelopment project was queried by a resident, along with inquiries about the safety of the township’s water supply and the resources available for homeless individuals in Woodbridge. The mayor responded by stating that the redevelopment project is currently on hold and the fire company remains operational. He assured residents of the safety of the township’s water and highlighted the availability of resources for the homeless, including response facilities and partnerships with local communities.
The public’s concern over speeding on Woodbridge Avenue led to the mayor’s acknowledgement of the issue. He informed residents that the police department would increase surveillance and monitor the area to address the traffic concerns.
In addition to addressing these concerns, the council celebrated local achievements and initiatives. They acknowledged the City of Perth Amboy and Middlesex County Arts Institute for creating a mural of Brian Taylor, a local Princeton and NBA alum. The successes of Middlesex College graduates were shared, emphasizing the college’s role as a significant educational resource in the community. Local job opportunities were also a topic of discussion, with the Woodbridge Township School District, New Jersey Transit, and the United States Postal Service among those seeking to fill positions.
The council paid tribute to Hank Incognito, the longtime owner of Avenel Pharmacy, acknowledging his generosity and impact on the community following his passing. Construction updates for schools four and five were provided, upcoming events at the Woodbridge Brewery and Baron Art Center were announced, as well as programs at the Free Public Library.
Furthermore, the council highlighted the resources available on the township’s website for job seekers, including the Woodbridge Public Library resource and various career guidance and learning tools. The Indian Business Association’s upcoming Independence Day Parade and the reminder about the upcoming farmers market were also noted.
The council concluded the meeting by entering an executive session to discuss contract negotiations. Upon reconvening, the resolution authorizing the administration to execute the labor contract with local 3044 was presented and approved.
