- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Licensing Board convened on August 1, 2024, to address several issues, including allegations against The Power Station on Harrison Avenue, cases of assault and battery at various establishments, and numerous license transfers and approvals.
One notable matter involved GTI Properties Inc., operating as The Power Station, which faced allegations of over-serving guests and disturbances on May 7, 2024. Following a detailed examination of the event’s management and responsibilities, board members concluded that there was insufficient evidence to justify a violation. A member stated, “I don’t see a violation here,” and another suggested clarifying the responsibilities of the licensee and management. Ultimately, the board found no violation.
In another notable decision, the board addressed an incident involving Game On Fenway LLC, operating as Game On Sports Cafe, where an employee was accused of assaulting a patron on May 18, 2024. After reviewing substantial video evidence and law enforcement narratives, a member remarked, “I did not see a violation,” leading to a consensus and finding of no violation.
The board also deliberated on BHC Corporation, doing business as Club Cafe, facing similar assault and battery charges dated May 19, 2024. Given the extensive video material and a lengthy letter received shortly before the hearing, a member proposed deferring the vote to allow for adequate review, which was agreed upon, postponing the decision to the next meeting on August 8.
Similarly, the case against K and K Restaurant Group Inc., doing business as Aella, concerning incidents of assault and battery on May 13, 2024, was deferred pending the availability of video evidence.
The board addressed overcrowding at The Greatest Bar on April 21, 2024, where the mechanical count showed 122 people, exceeding the capacity of 100. One member noted the licensee’s cooperation in compliance post-incident, citing the Celtics playoff game as an unforeseen situation. Despite this, the board agreed on a violation and decided on issuing a written warning.
Arua Corporation, located on Bennington Street, faced a bottle service violation on May 12, 2024. The board unanimously agreed on a violation and recommended a warning, requiring the licensee to post a notice indicating that bottle service is not permitted.
Transitioning to transactional hearings held on July 31, 2024, the board reviewed several petitions. Chip Newbery LLC, operating as Chip City, sought a common victualer license, receiving unanimous approval for their operating hours. Depy Enterprises Inc. petitioned for a change in closing hours for their Domino’s location, with specific conditions placed on in-person orders and cash transactions after midnight, which also received unanimous approval.
Significant discussions included the transfer of a license and location to 10 World Trade LH LLC on World Trade Center. The board approved the transfer and appointed John Hines, the fourth, as the manager of record with a 2 a.m. closing hour for both indoor and outdoor operations, emphasizing that any subsequent management transfer would require a community process.
Another notable case was the application of G&V Ice Cream and Sub Inc., operating as Don’t Tell Auntie, which sought to transfer its license to Early Monsoon LLC at a new location on Boylston Street. The board approved both the transfer and the manager of record, Mr. Patel, along with a pledge of the license and inventory to Rockland Trust Company.
DJ’s Market applied for a retail Package Store wine and beverages license with a closing time of 6 p.m. The board noted the market’s specialty items complementing neighborhood needs without selling single-serving beers. The application was approved, with a requirement for any changes to the floor plan to be brought back for approval.
Gent Catering LLC, doing business as From Scratch, applied for a common victualler license with an all-alcoholic beverages license, closing at 10 p.m. Despite the establishment’s small capacity, the board recognized the significant public need for such a venue in the outer neighborhoods of Boston and approved the application pending license availability.
Additionally, various establishments, including Timeout Market and American Craft Brewery, requested one-day amendments to their existing licenses for special events, receiving board approval without objections.
The board also reviewed the release of a pledge of license and security held by Lazaro Oriana for Camy 1975 Corporation and voted on Tandav Corporation’s application for a retail Package Store wine and beverages license for Old Harbor Market in South Boston. With neighborhood support evidenced by a petition, the board imposed conditions on the approval, including prohibiting the sale of single-serving beers and requiring board approval for any floor plan changes.
