- Meeting Overview:
The recent Barnegat School Board meeting saw an impassioned call for increased attention to student rights, alongside discussions on grants, donations, advanced course offerings, and safety measures within the schools.
One item at the meeting was the introduction of the new student representative, Daniel Hoffman, who voiced his concerns about the lack of focus on student rights in board discussions. Hoffman, a rising senior and executive student body president for the upcoming school year, emphasized that every decision, policy, and vote impacts students. He proposed forming a student union to advocate for student grievances and rights, noting that previous student government efforts had been overly focused on school events. Hoffman laid out several initiatives, including blood drives, food drives, and a monthly newsletter to improve student awareness of district events.
Hoffman also highlighted the need for better recognition of student achievements beyond standard honor societies. He suggested acknowledging students excelling in various subjects not currently covered and emphasized celebrating the “whole student” for their diverse skills and talents. Additionally, he proposed a policy allowing high-achieving students to opt-out of final exams based on GPA criteria to alleviate stress.
He discussed course offerings, pointing out that some advanced classes like AP Calculus BC and AP Human Geography were not being offered due to low enrollment. Hoffman stressed the importance of evaluating prerequisites to ensure equitable access to educational opportunities. Quoting his predecessor Jane Havid, he mentioned that there is still much work to be done in terms of equality, inclusivity, and overall curricula.
Hoffman concluded his presentation by highlighting upcoming events for the school year, including senior portrait sessions and football games, and expressed gratitude to educators who had impacted his education. A board member acknowledged Hoffman’s enthusiasm and the depth of his ideas but clarified the limits of the student representative’s role in board discussions. They emphasized that the board operates within a structured framework where the administration handles daily operations, and the board makes final decisions based on the administration’s recommendations.
Following Hoffman’s presentation, committee reports provided updates on various topics. The Finance Committee discussed travel reimbursements, purchase orders, and grant applications for the Ida Grant and the ESSA Grant. The board acknowledged several donations, including school supplies from the Lighthouse Venue Women’s Club of Barnegat and personal hygiene item bags from the United Way of Monmouth and Ocean County. They also discussed a motion to approve membership in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) for the district to participate in approved athletic activities.
The Education Committee, led by Mrs. Cherney, reviewed motions to discard outdated textbooks and approve new college and university placements, continuing education requests, and field trips. They emphasized the importance of evaluating the educational value of field trips and discussed plans for a career day scheduled for October 14. Updates were provided on the summer reading curriculum, curriculum writing projects, new English Language Arts standards, and the integration of artificial intelligence in classrooms. The committee is awaiting further direction from the superintendent regarding adopting new books for classrooms and the media center.
The Health, Safety, and Technology Committee, chaired by Mr. Iamonte, reported on safety measures implemented across the schools. Cardiac response teams have been established, and the Raptor visitor management system has been implemented to screen visitors. Door alarms have been installed at the high school, and the facility department is numbering exterior classroom windows to assist first responders. The technology department is leasing new laptops for staff and Chromebooks for students, with old equipment scheduled for recycling.
During the personnel committee report, significant staff changes were noted due to retirements, resignations, and new hires. The superintendent highlighted new board member Daniel and addressed confusion surrounding sports tryouts, stating that a concise memo would be prepared for the community. He praised the collaborative process in recent contract negotiations with the Barnegat Education Association (BEA) and acknowledged staff achievements, including Briella Patano, honored as an Above and Beyond Teacher by Applebee’s, and Megan Vanderpal, recognized by the Patch and T-Mobile.
The meeting also included the acknowledgment of graduating senior Tara LantÃa, who ranked ninth in her class and participated in the National Honor Society and student government. She received a certificate and a medal for her accomplishments.
President Marks encouraged community engagement during the public comments session, although no community members spoke. The board approved various contracts, finance committee motions, and education committee motions, including the discarding of outdated textbooks and the remote learning handbook’s standardization. Personnel committee motions were also approved, with one motion tabled for executive session discussion.
