North Port City Council Recognizes Police Chief and Environmental Volunteer in Community-Focused Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The recent North Port City Council meeting highlighted community contributions, including the recognition of Police Chief Todd Garrison and environmental volunteer Jake Mohr, alongside discussions on public concerns and city initiatives.
A key highlight of the meeting was the recognition of Police Chief Todd Garrison, who received the Outstanding Chief Executive of the Year Award from the Florida Police Chiefs Association. The nomination emphasized Garrison’s leadership in advocating for higher police officer salaries and promoting the integration of technology within the department. Under his leadership, the department implemented license plate readers and body-worn cameras, enhancing law enforcement capabilities. Garrison expressed his gratitude and humility, stating, “I’m extremely humbled and honored to be your chief,” and acknowledged the dedication of his fellow officers.
Another notable recognition was awarded to Jake Mohr, who received the 2024 Green Citizen Award for his voluntary environmental efforts in the Cypress Falls community. Jake’s initiatives included cataloging nearly 600 trees prior to Hurricane Ian, which greatly assisted the Homeowners Association with tree replacement efforts. His work in organizing plant exchanges and educating residents about environmentally friendly landscaping practices was highly praised, with a speaker noting, “His work has been totally voluntary and he simply does it for his love of the environment.”
The meeting also featured a report from Frank Thomas, the Solid Waste Manager. Thomas discussed efforts to educate new residents on recycling practices, highlighting common mistakes such as the improper disposal of plastic bags in recycling bins. He encouraged residents to consult the city’s website for more information on solid waste management.
Stacey LaSalle, the Emergency Management Coordinator, emphasized the importance of having an evacuation plan, especially as hurricane season approaches. She advised residents to document their plans to ensure they are prepared in case of an emergency.
Public comments during the meeting brought attention to ongoing community concerns. One resident expressed frustration with persistent property management issues, citing a 15-year history of feeling harassed and calling for the council to address these issues. The commenter described the situation as “ridiculous” and urged the council to take action.
Monica Beckett, representing the North Port Drug Free Youth Program, discussed the challenges faced by her organization, which supports middle and high school students in committing to remain drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free. Beckett highlighted funding challenges and requested the council’s consideration for financial assistance to sustain the program, which she noted is unique in the county.
The meeting continued with the introduction of new city manager Christine McDade, who introduced several new team members across various departments, including technology, finance, and public works. Commissioner Emrich expressed gratitude for the community’s support during his recent health struggles, thanking fellow commissioners and specific community members who assisted him during his recovery.
Several proclamations were presented during the meeting, including one for the Suncoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading, which addresses chronic absenteeism across multiple counties. Another proclamation recognized National Forensic Science Week. A further proclamation celebrated National Crime Intelligence Analyst Appreciation Day, highlighting the important role of crime and intelligence analysts in supporting law enforcement.
The City of North Port’s communications division received a Golden Image Award for their website redesign, recognized as the best in the state by the Florida Public Relations Association. The division also anticipates receiving a national award for their emergency communications work during Hurricane Ian. Additionally, Laura Ansel was acknowledged for achieving the Certified Public Relations Counselor credential, and Brittany Raines was recognized for attaining the Certified Parks and Recreational Professional designation. Raines has contributed to the Aquatic Center, generating over a million dollars in net revenue over the past three seasons.
