- Meeting Overview:
The Woodbridge Township Council meeting focused on recognizing the heroic actions of local police officers involved in a dangerous incident, addressing public concerns about traffic safety and animal welfare, and discussing upcoming community events and ordinances.
Mayor John E. McCormac commenced the meeting by highlighting the presence of police officers recently involved in a perilous incident. He detailed the circumstances at Albert’s Palace, where officers encountered a suspect armed with a handgun. The incident resulted in officers being shot but ultimately protected innocent bystanders. Mayor McCormac read a proclamation honoring the bravery of five officers involved in the June 13, 2024, incident, where they responded to a wanted person alert from the New York City Police Department. Officers Justin Nery and Detective Matthew Morrow were wounded during the confrontation, with the suspect pronounced deceased at the scene. The mayor expressed pride in the police department, stating that the officers averted what could have been a disastrous situation.
Following the mayor’s remarks, Sergeant Timothy Lockery addressed the audience, acknowledging the unpredictability of the situation and expressing gratitude for his fellow officers. He credited their training and quick actions for their survival and the safety of others present during the incident. Police Director Bob Hubner also spoke, emphasizing the inherent dangers of police work and the critical role of training and teamwork in preventing further violence.
As the meeting transitioned to standard council business, discussions included an ordinance revising chapter 10 concerning taxi cabs and limousines, which focused on insurance requirements. The council held a public hearing on this ordinance, which concluded without public comment, leading to its adoption. Additionally, the council discussed an ordinance authorizing the township to accept property from Middlesex County for the Omar Avenue extension, clarifying the specifics of the property location and its purpose as part of the extension plan.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, residents raised various concerns. Andrew Niki from Fords expressed frustrations about traffic issues, recounting personal experiences of cars speeding past him and calling for increased traffic enforcement. He highlighted a specific incident where a car sped past him at 90 miles an hour while he was waiting for a traffic light.
Jessica Mayor from Avenel raised concerns about Sequest, an animal attraction, which she claimed was exploiting animals for profit and referenced a 16-page notice of violation from the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife dated June 25, 2024. She detailed various violations, including inadequate enclosures and poor veterinary care, and expressed dismay over the township’s perceived support for Sequest. Mayor insisted on ethical alternatives to replace Sequest, arguing that the community deserves better.
Another resident, Dipy Sheth from Tenafly, echoed concerns for the animals at Sequest, urging the council to consider the ethical implications of the facility’s operations. Sheth referenced a story from Matthew Scully’s book, “Dominion,” about a pig named Lulu who acted heroically in a medical emergency, emphasizing that animals should not be undervalued or treated cruelly.
In response to the concerns about Sequest, a council member acknowledged the validity of the complaints but explained the limitations of the township’s authority. They noted that health inspectors report appropriate violations to the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Further public comments included concerns about noise and speeding issues stemming from motorcycle activity on local roads, with residents expressing frustration over the lack of enforcement and suggesting educational initiatives to address the problem.
The council also announced several upcoming events, including the Avenel Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Week open house, updates on construction at School 4 and School 5, the St. James Street Fair, the Hispanic Heritage Festival, and the 17th annual Tour to Woodbridge bike tour. Additional announcements included a barbecue for seniors, a kickball fundraiser, and the Colonia cleanup event for National Public Lands Day.
