- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Bloomingdale Borough Council meeting, a substantial grant from Green Acres was announced. The $750,000 grant, combined with approximately $500,000 from open space grants, will fund the development of a modern playground at Bo Pond. The anticipated project, slated for early spring, will feature a rubberized floor to ensure safety and accessibility for all children. This initiative comes as the existing playground reaches over 30 years in age. The beloved gazebo dedicated to a child on SRA Lane will remain a centerpiece of the park, and acknowledgments were made to those instrumental in securing the grants.
The meeting also highlighted ongoing community engagement efforts, including an annual event organized by the fire department to support the Kostka family. Over its eleven-year history, this collaboration with the auxiliary, police, and the Department of Public Works has raised approximately $120,000. The event’s success underscores the community’s dedication to supporting local families. Upcoming Fire Prevention Week activities were announced, featuring educational visits to local schools and daycare centers. An open house on October 15 at Firemen’s Hall will offer children an opportunity to explore fire trucks and participate in demonstrations.
In addition to these community-focused initiatives, the council addressed various public health awareness campaigns and local events. The Mayor acknowledged Breast Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of screening and education. Upcoming community services include a confidential shredding event on October 19 and a skin cancer screening at the fire hall on October 9.
The council’s attention also turned to community concerns, with residents voicing issues during the public comment segment. A significant topic involved a squatter situation affecting a local family. Sean Hoyer detailed how his elderly mother had unwittingly invited a man named James McBride and his son into their home, expecting a short stay. However, the situation extended over four months, causing distress and a disruption to the family’s routine. Hoyer expressed frustration over McBride’s claims of squatter’s rights, despite the lack of a formal rental agreement. Patrick Lewis, a friend of the Hoyer family, corroborated the account and emphasized the emotional toll on Hoyer’s mother. The council members expressed empathy and a willingness to assist within their capacity, acknowledging the complex legal challenges involved in such cases.
Further, the Mayor announced various upcoming events and initiatives, such as the Expedition Bloomingdale scavenger hunt planned for October 19 at SLO Park. However, concerns were raised about low registration numbers, which could threaten the event’s viability. The Mayor also highlighted a Veterans Day ceremony scheduled for November 11 at Sloan Park and expressed gratitude to the Economic Development Commission for organizing community activities.
Public library initiatives were also a topic of discussion, with an upcoming fundraiser for the Lendale Foundation for Literacy planned for November 3. The library continues to offer engaging programs, including a Cookbook Club and a murder mystery book club meeting. The council reiterated the need for child supervision during library visits.
