- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School Board gave preliminary approval for an ambitious educational trip to Switzerland and Italy, scheduled for the summer of 2026. The trip, aimed at providing students with extensive cultural and educational experiences, was a focal point of the session, revealing both enthusiasm and logistical planning efforts to ensure its success.
The proposed ten-day trip will allow students to delve into Swiss history relating to World War II, ride gondolas up Swiss mountains, and explore the Renaissance period by visiting iconic cities such as Venice and Florence. The journey will conclude in Rome, promising a comprehensive historical and cultural education. Importantly, the trip is structured as a private tour to prevent mingling with unrelated groups, which is expected to enhance the educational focus and safety of the experience.
Fundraising for the trip was a significant topic of discussion. It was emphasized that individual fundraising pages, similar to a GoFundMe model, would be set up for students, facilitating direct donations. This model had proven effective in the past, with instances of students receiving substantial contributions that eased their families’ financial burdens. Moreover, a merit-based scholarship program through EF Tours, and potential candy bar sales, were proposed to support the financial feasibility of the trip for all interested students.
Logistical details about the trip were also carefully considered. The board discussed the ratio of chaperones to students, which was set at 6:1. The anticipated cost per participant was outlined as $5,229, inclusive of personal expenses. The trip’s dates, tentatively set from June 29 to July 8, 2026, will be finalized 180 days prior to departure to allow ample time for families to prepare.
In another key segment of the meeting, the board addressed several policy updates prompted by recent legislative changes. Notable revisions included updates to language regarding oral fluid testing and vaping awareness, as well as incorporating American Indian cultural practices into policy. These policy adjustments were presented and approved unanimously.
The board also ratified the 2024-2025 Minnesota Reading to Ensure Academic Development Act, commonly known as the Read Act. This initiative is designed to enhance reading proficiency across grade levels, supported by approximately $273,000 allocated for teacher compensation. These funds will facilitate training for K-5 and select K-12 teachers, with stipends provided to participating educators.
Moreover, the board unanimously approved a collective bargaining agreement with the district’s information technology specialists. The agreement featured a 4% annual salary increase and additional steps for the two-year period, with economic terms estimated to cost around $149,000. Modifications to vacation time and sick leave language were also included.
Additionally, a student board representative presented a report highlighting various student activities and accomplishments. Among these were the National Honor Society’s induction ceremony, the choir’s performance at a Twins game, and the upcoming production of “Mean Girls.” The representative also noted the school’s ongoing initiatives such as the blood drive scheduled after the MEA break and the support efforts for Burnsville, North Carolina, following Hurricane Milton.
Finally, the board concluded the open session by moving to a closed session to discuss safety and security updates with representatives from the Burnsville Police Department.
