- Meeting Overview:
The Bernards Township Council recently held a meeting where they honored Kathleen “Kippy” Pichi, a dedicated community volunteer with nearly three decades of service. The council also recognized October as Italian Heritage Month, highlighting the contributions of Italian-Americans to the community. The meeting included discussions on cultural heritage, best practices for township management, and public concerns about election conduct and zoning issues.
The most notable moment of the meeting was the council’s recognition of Kathleen “Kippy” Pichi for her 29 years of service to the community. Pichi’s contributions to various boards, including the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Adjustment, Library Board of Trustees, and the Beautification Task Force, were acknowledged in a resolution presented by the Mayor. The resolution also noted Pichi’s recent recognition by Congressman Tom Kane Jr. as a distinguished senior.
Following this tribute, the council moved to celebrate Italian Heritage Month. The resolution acknowledged the historical significance of Italian-American migration and the role of the local Unico National chapter in promoting Italian heritage and community involvement. A council member shared personal reflections on Italian culture, emphasizing family and community values and the struggles faced by Italian immigrants. Another member praised Unico’s positive impact over the past century and recognized their recent charitable activities, such as a football event benefiting pediatric cancer efforts. The resolution was unanimously passed, with council members expressing support for cultural diversity in Bernards Township.
The meeting then transitioned to address the township’s best practices inventory questionnaire for 2024. The township administrator reported a score of 45.5 out of 46.5 possible points, exceeding the minimum requirement for state aid. This achievement was celebrated by the council, with members commending the administration’s diligence. Despite the high score, no additional state aid was granted. Public comments included praise for the township’s responsiveness and expressions of gratitude for the dedication of board members.
A community member voiced strong opinions regarding the election campaign, criticizing certain campaign tactics and calling for respectful discourse. The speaker condemned the labeling of individuals with terms like “right-wing extremists,” equating such language to “Nazi” and “fascist” ideologies. The comments highlighted a call for professional conduct during the election season.
The meeting also addressed zoning matters, with a staff member clarifying the legal restrictions on council members regarding zoning board involvement.
Additionally, the council discussed various community initiatives, including a program for homeless and disabled veterans, a ski and snowboard program for students, and a collaboration with the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey. The Deer Commission’s efforts to secure grant funding for a drone survey to assess deer populations were also noted.
In terms of governance, the council highlighted the process of selecting individuals for town boards, emphasizing diversity and qualifications. A presentation on local tax allocation provided residents with insights into property assessments. Upcoming community events, such as a free rabies vaccination clinic and a townwide food drive, were also promoted.
