- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Somerville Borough Council meeting, discussions on the establishment of a cannabis dispensary and a financial agreement amendment for Avalon Somerville Station dominated the agenda. The proposed dispensary, set to be located at an Exxon station on Route 22, aims to implement security measures and community engagement strategies. Meanwhile, the Avalon Somerville Station financial agreement amendment progresses the final phase of redevelopment in the landfill area.
The cannabis dispensary proposal garnered attention as representatives from a company with extensive retail experience presented their plans. The company, which operates multiple convenience stores in highly regulated environments, emphasized their commitment to compliance and community involvement. They detailed security protocols including the implementation of Veras Scan for age verification and collaboration with Win and Associates for comprehensive security measures. The proposed dispensary’s design incorporates elements to enhance security and customer experience, with discussions touching upon the use of automated safes and 24/7 surveillance systems to mitigate risks associated with cash transactions.
Council members raised concerns about the dispensary’s proximity to Somerville High School, focusing on the potential for underage access. In response, the representatives assured that the dispensary’s design would limit visibility and access, relying on controlled entry points and a lack of windows facing public areas. The representatives also addressed environmental concerns, promising adherence to Department of Environmental Protection regulations during the transition from a gas station to a cannabis business.
The meeting also addressed the Avalon Somerville Station financial agreement amendment. The ordinance, which authorizes the mayor to execute an amendment with Avalon Somerville Station Urban Renewal LLC, pertains to the landfill redevelopment area. This amendment is primarily a procedural step in the final development stage of Avalon Bay’s apartment buildings, involving the transfer of elements from a previous agreement. The ordinance was introduced without public comment and received unanimous approval from the council.
In addition to these topics, the council tackled various routine matters. These included a resolution on an alcohol beverage license transfer, the cancellation of uncollectible taxes, and the approval of a grant for youth services programs. A noteworthy discussion arose around resolution 305, which designates the borough as the housing agent for the Section 8 program. The council was reassured that this five-year plan, required by HUD, would not incur costs for local taxpayers as it is federally funded.
