- Meeting Overview:
In its recent meeting, the Union Town Council passed an ordinance prohibiting the short-term rental of amenities or accessories within the township. Additionally, the council approved a new regulation allowing skill-based amusement machines to award tickets based on performance rather than a fixed number. These changes aim to address local concerns about property use and entertainment options.
The council’s decision to prohibit short-term rentals of amenities or accessories was unanimously approved. This ordinance, amending Chapter 447 of the municipal code, addresses issues related to the temporary leasing of property features, which some residents felt disrupted community cohesion and stability. The measure reflects a broader trend in local governance to regulate short-term rental practices, which have been a contentious topic in many municipalities.
In addition to property regulations, the council introduced a new article in Chapter 203 of the municipal code concerning redemption amusement games. This measure allows skill-based gaming machines to reward players with tickets based on their performance outcomes. The ordinance was also passed unanimously and aims to modernize the township’s approach to amusement gaming, potentially attracting more businesses and entertainment options to the area.
The meeting also saw the approval of the private sale of two undersized lots on Oswald Place, allowing the township to manage its property holdings more efficiently. Furthermore, the council discussed a draft ordinance amending floodplain management regulations, which will be considered for final reading in an upcoming meeting. This ordinance seeks to adopt updated flood hazard maps and designate a floodplain administrator.
Lastly, the council authorized several contracts, including lighting installations at local basketball courts and renovations at the police headquarters. These projects are part of the township’s ongoing efforts to improve public amenities and infrastructure. Notably, the council approved a five-year lease agreement with Seaboard Properties LLC for a parking lot, with options for two ten-year extensions.
