- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Somers Point City Council meeting, a portion of the discussion focused on tenant rights and redevelopment issues, sparking intense exchanges between council members and public commentators. The council also recognized long-standing community contributions, discussed economic development initiatives, and addressed several resolutions related to city planning and management.
One of a notable topics was the public comment period dominated by Levi Fox, representing tenant interests. Fox voiced dissatisfaction with the council’s perceived lack of response to tenant issues, especially concerning the eviction of 17 families. He questioned whether the council prioritized developers over residents and challenged the council president on these matters, stating, “I will give you another chance, Madam council president, if you want to respond to the question.” Fox raised concerns about the potential sacrifice of public land and the use of taxpayer money for redevelopment lawyers.
Council members attempted to address Fox’s concerns, with one emphasizing they were not in favor of tax deals or programs that could harm the community. Another member highlighted the importance of tenant protections and smart growth that safeguards residents, while others pointed out that redevelopment, if conducted appropriately, could benefit the community. Despite these assurances, the exchange remained heated, reflecting deep-seated tensions over redevelopment and tenant protections in Somers Point.
In a more celebratory moment, the council unanimously adopted Resolution Number 252, recognizing Edward “Butch” McGrath for his long-standing service. McGrath, a city fire subcode official since 1993, was honored for his community involvement, including his work with the Somers Point Historical Society and participation in local events. Council President Johnston and other members expressed personal gratitude and shared fond memories, noting McGrath’s contributions to the community. The council’s appreciation was punctuated with applause and a photo opportunity to commemorate McGrath’s retirement.
The meeting also featured updates from Chuck Wescott, chair of the Economic Development Committee. Wescott reported on the committee’s efforts to boost community engagement through the “Do You Love Somers Point” campaign, which has experienced high levels of participation and impressive engagement metrics. The committee’s collaboration with Triad and Associates for the master plan reexamination was also highlighted, with Wescott detailing meetings and tours conducted to better understand the city’s needs.
Additionally, the council tackled several resolutions. Resolution Number 240 authorized an executive session to discuss ongoing litigation involving the city and its zoning board, while Resolution Number 241, concerning potential redevelopment negotiations for a property on Broadway, was tabled after a council member raised concerns about potential citizen displacement. Resolution Number 242, authorizing another executive session for redevelopment agreements, passed without opposition, as did other resolutions addressing property assessment litigation, local arts grants, and contractual discussions related to the Beach concert series.
In other discussions, the council considered the introduction of an ordinance to address shopping cart management at local stores, with praise directed at ShopRite for its proactive measures. Delays in the Ocean Avenue Phase Two project were also noted, with the council awaiting final bids for the next steps.
Health and wellness initiatives were highlighted, including ongoing yoga sessions, walking programs, and a well-attended presentation on vaccines and flu shots. Plans for further health-related presentations were mentioned.
