Edison School Board Debates Transportation Overhauls and Honors Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Edison School Board meeting, discussions took place concerning the district’s transportation system overhaul, the recognition of outstanding student achievements, and community involvement in decision-making. The board addressed financial sustainability in transportation, celebrated student accomplishments, and explored potential policy changes while engaging with public concerns.
The most pressing topic discussed was the proposed changes to the district’s transportation system. The board focused on establishing a financially sustainable fee structure for a subscription bussing program, which aims to reduce reliance on external contractors by potentially purchasing or leasing additional buses. This shift would involve expanding in-house transportation services using district employees as drivers, which is expected to be more cost-effective. Additionally, the committee is considering hiring an extra certified mechanic to handle maintenance in-house and exploring cooperative purchasing programs to manage rising operational costs. Although funding for new buses is not currently allocated in the budget, the district has recently acquired two new 24-passenger buses and a wheelchair-accessible van. The transportation committee anticipates a decrease in the number of subscription bus routes and riders in the next school year and is exploring shared service agreements with neighboring districts to further manage expenses.
The board meeting also highlighted notable student achievements, beginning with the recognition of Sanvi Bhat and Shreya Reddy for their non-profit organization “We Are With You,” which advocates for children with cancer. This initiative has engaged students from various educational levels, fostering a sense of community and continuity. The Odyssey of the Mind team from Woodrow Wilson Middle School was celebrated for achieving first place at the world finals in Iowa. Additionally, Rhea Ray was acknowledged for her Eagle Scout project at James Madison Primary School, and Armida Caldwell received accolades for being named Director of the Year by the New Jersey School Nutrition Association. Caldwell manages meal services for 17,000 students daily across 20 schools, and her efforts were praised by the board.
Superintendent Edward Aldarelli delivered a report marking the conclusion of the 2025-2026 academic year. He thanked educators and staff for their dedication and outlined summer initiatives, including the extended school year program and facility upgrades. Notably, the district is expanding its Career Connections Hub to support college and career readiness, with new student internship partnerships being announced. The board echoed the importance of internships, emphasizing their role in preparing students for future careers.
Public comments featured diverse community concerns, including ideas for potential policy changes. A resident named Grace praised the leadership of Principal Charles Ross and stressed the importance of selecting a dynamic successor. Another resident, Anthony Marra, urged the board to adopt a parental bill of rights, citing a Supreme Court case to argue in favor of parental authority without infringing on student rights. Sue Campione requested that the school calendar respect Jewish holidays, particularly Passover, and Elizabeth Conway highlighted communication challenges with subscription bussing and praised the year’s accomplishments. Meanwhile, Matt Ravanac, representing the teachers’ association, congratulated retirees and called for respect across differing community beliefs.
The board also addressed internal matters, including the successful negotiation of a new contract with the custodians’ union. Additionally, the board encouraged community engagement through the use of public facilities, such as the tennis courts at J.P. Stevens and Edison High School, inviting responsible use and shared access.
As the meeting concluded, board members reflected on the successful graduation ceremonies, which included student-led announcements and recognition of 1,200 graduates from both high schools. The board highlighted the achievements of the Success Academy, a program aimed at integrating students into in-district programs and reducing the need for costly out-of-district placements.
