The council approved a bond ordinance authorizing the purchase of two new pumper fire engines, totaling $1,915,000. A public hearing on this ordinance is scheduled for November 18. In addition to the fire engines, the council introduced an ordinance to install pedestrian crossing flashing lights at intersections including River Road and Rambler Avenue, and River Road and Canterbury Lane. This project will be funded by $15,500 from the capital improvement fund, with a public hearing also set for November 18.

The meeting also highlighted the borough’s performance on the annual best practices inventory issued by the Division of Local Government Services. New Milford scored 43.5 out of 46.5, qualifying for the full state aid allotment. The inventory evaluates compliance with various operational and ethical standards. The certified inventory was submitted before the deadline, and council members expressed satisfaction with the results, praising the staff and administration’s efforts.

Another topic of discussion was the adjustment of attorney fees to align with market rates. The council acknowledged that current fees of $150 per hour lag behind the average market rate of $165. A proposed increase to $160 per hour, starting in 2025, was approved, which aims to maintain competitiveness in retaining legal services.

The council also reviewed upcoming community events, emphasizing the importance of public engagement. The annual domestic violence awareness event, supported by the borough and the public school district, is set for October 29 and will be live-streamed for broader access. A paper shredding event is scheduled for November 2 and 3, with early arrival encouraged due to capacity limitations. Additionally, the annual Veterans Day ceremony is planned for November 11 on the Borough Hall lawn, and various holiday events, including the Nativity lighting, Christmas tree lighting, and menorah lighting, are scheduled for December.

In community matters, the council acknowledged the New Milford Municipal Alliance’s efforts in organizing the Adam event, a memorial for addiction awareness. This event commemorates Adam Roth and others affected by addiction, with significant support from community organizations, including the New York Giants and Bergen County police departments, for a domestic violence symposium.

The council encouraged residents to participate in leaf collection efforts and expressed hopes for the cleanup of candles left in the pond. The beautification agenda also included appreciation for festive decorations set up by the DPW.

The Board of Health reported on enforcement actions against tobacco sales to minors, including a program where minors attempt to purchase tobacco products to ensure compliance. A spring bike safety event was proposed to promote helmet use and public health awareness.

The Environmental Commission celebrated the success of Clean Communities Day, with 46 participants collecting 400 pounds of garbage. They are also preparing a community energy planning grant project to engage residents in energy conservation efforts.
