- Meeting Overview:
A recent Passaic City Council meeting centered on the introduction of a significant microtransit system aimed at improving transportation accessibility for the city’s senior population and residents without personal vehicles. The program, supported by a $750,000 state allocation, was praised by attendees for its potential to transform mobility in Passaic and neighboring Clifton, emphasizing enhanced access to essential services and reducing environmental impacts.
The introduction of the microtransit initiative was the most notable item discussed, with the proposal receiving widespread support from local officials and community leaders. The initiative is designed to meet the needs of Passaic’s significant senior population, approximately 28.9% of the city’s 70,000 residents, and those without access to personal vehicles. A new microtransit system, set to launch in mid-2025, aims to provide enhanced mobility options for these groups, allowing them to integrate more fully into city life.
He outlined the benefits of microtransit systems, such as reducing personal vehicle reliance, cutting traffic congestion, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The program is expected to improve access to transit hubs, offer alternatives to traditional routes, and specifically cater to the needs of seniors and individuals with disabilities.
Residents of Clifton, as noted by Mayor Grabowski, are expected to benefit from the program. The current Senior Transport service requires advanced booking for medical appointments, whereas the new microtransit system promises more flexible, on-demand ride requests, similar to a private car service. This development is particularly important for Clifton residents living near the city borders who lack reliable transportation.
The business administrator and executive director of the Redevelopment Parking Authority in Passaic highlighted additional initiatives to complement the microtransit system. These include a free shuttle service launching soon and a future bike share program.
John Bartlett, director of the Passaic County Board of County Commissioners, reiterated the challenges posed by low car ownership rates and the need for effective transit solutions. He emphasized the importance of “first mile, last mile” connections to encourage public transit use. The microtransit system will leverage technology, allowing residents to book rides via smartphones.
Eric Gardner, representing Via, the technology partner for the microtransit initiative, provided an overview of the upcoming Pic Move service. This service will enable residents within designated zones to book low-cost shared rides using a dedicated mobile app. For those without smartphones, a customer service line will be available for ride bookings. Gardner explained that the app would use algorithms to match passengers traveling in the same direction, directing them to nearby virtual bus stops for efficient shared trips.
Concerns regarding accessibility for the Latino community, which forms a portion of Passaic County’s population, were addressed during the meeting. It was confirmed that the app and customer service would support multiple languages, including Spanish.
The meeting also touched on employment opportunities for local residents as drivers for the Pic Move service. It was noted that employing local drivers could enhance service efficiency and build connections between drivers and riders. Via’s operational history in New Jersey was highlighted, with existing microtransit services in Camden and Jersey City, and partnerships with New Jersey Transit for paratransit services.
