Passaic County Approves Extensive Park and Historic Preservation Funding Amid ADA Compliance Push
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Passaic County Board of Commissioners meeting focused on approving significant funding for park improvements and historic preservation projects. The meeting also highlighted efforts to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and celebrated the awarding of scholarships to local students.
The most substantial topic discussed was the allocation of funds from the 2024 Passaic County Open Space, Farmland, and Historic Preservation Trust Fund. The board reviewed and discussed a range of proposed grants aimed at improving parks and preserving historical sites throughout the county. For instance, Zaldy Park in Clifton is set to receive $225,000 for field lighting installation, while the Community Association of the Highlands requested $56,219 for erosion control and additional enhancements to their natural pool area. The Friends of Patterson Parks were recommended to receive $98,900 for urgent tree removal and water line repairs in Hayden Heights and Ralph D. Maranonio Park, addressing infrastructure needs critical for maintaining public spaces.
Several municipalities put forward requests for significant funding, including Little Falls, which proposed a $225,000 project to repurpose a baseball diamond into a multi-use sports field, accompanied by refurbishments to basketball courts and the installation of new playground equipment. North Haledon sought $225,000 to replace playground equipment at High Mountain Middle School, with a specific focus on safety and modernization.
In addition to park improvements, historic preservation was a key agenda item. The board reviewed four applications for funding assistance, including a request from the American Labor Museum for structural repairs to a historic retention wall. Pompton Lakes sought funds for the roof and gutter system restoration of its library. The Friends of Wallisch Homestead applied for $48,000 to continue the rehabilitation of a timber barn, focusing on essential siding and trim repairs.
Wayne Township’s application for $250,000 aimed to restore the Wayne Museum complex, specifically the Me Van D house, which holds historical significance dating back to the American Revolution. This project aims to convert the site into a visitor center, enriching the community’s cultural heritage.
Throughout the discussions, emphasis was placed on ensuring that all projects addressed ADA compliance. This was reinforced by Janice Sangle, chairwoman of the County Advisory Council on Disability, who urged the board and community members to prioritize accessibility. While not all projects directly targeted compliance, existing structures were confirmed to already meet necessary standards. The advisory committee’s scoring criteria specifically considered accessibility features, aligning with the ongoing push for ADA compliance within the county.
The meeting also celebrated the awarding of scholarships by the New Jersey Association of Counties to five local students, recognizing their academic achievements and leadership. Notably, scholarship recipient Notions was commended for her focus on computer science and cybersecurity, while Samha Chowri expressed her gratitude and shared plans to attend Montclair State University.
In financial matters, the board acknowledged a successful bond sale amounting to over $3.9 million at a favorable interest rate. The recognition of the Friends of Bay County Parks as a cultural organization by the state further highlighted potential funding opportunities.
