Reading Select Board Discusses School Safety, Math Education, and Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
In the latest Reading Select Board meeting, central topics included updates on school safety protocols, the introduction of enhanced math education pathways, and various community engagement initiatives.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on school safety, with updates provided by school resource officers Mike Davis and Brian Lewis. Both officers shared insights into their roles and recent activities aimed at improving school security. They discussed their participation in training programs that address responses to threats such as bomb threats and swatting calls. The officers detailed their work on enhancing school safety through Alice drills conducted at the high school and middle schools, which are designed to prepare staff and students for potential emergencies. Additionally, their efforts included professional development sessions for elementary school staff, focusing on the Alice methodology. These initiatives were part of a comprehensive overhaul of the district-wide incident response plans, resulting in new protocols communicated to school staff via an informative video.
The meeting also covered discussions around math education pathways, which are critical for ensuring students are well-prepared for future academic and career opportunities. Updates were presented on the summer math modules for middle school students, which have been refined based on feedback from the previous year. These modules offer two distinct paths for rising eighth graders: one for reviewing seventh-grade material and another for those ready to transition directly into Algebra 1. At the end of the summer, students will have the chance to assess their readiness for this accelerated path. The meeting also highlighted changes to the summer honors geometry course, incorporating independent work weeks to better accommodate students’ learning needs. Professional development opportunities for math teachers were emphasized, with a focus on ensuring rigorous and beneficial learning experiences for students.
Another topic was the ongoing collaboration between the community and schools through initiatives such as the Children’s Cabinet. Teresa Wiggins and Barbara Best provided updates on the cabinet’s efforts to identify and address issues faced by children in the community. These efforts include a family closet initiative, aimed at providing gently used clothing to families in a sustainable manner. Listening sessions conducted with 167 students at Reading Memorial High School revealed insights into students’ feelings of connection within the school environment.
Further discussions delved into community service efforts led by school resource officers, who have been engaging with students through presentations on social media and internet safety. These efforts are tailored to younger students. An upcoming internet safety presentation for parents, organized with the Coolidge PTO, aims to equip parents with knowledge about social media safety measures.
The meeting concluded with logistical matters, including the official setting of the last day of school for Monday, June 16, in accordance with state requirements. Scholarship expenditures were also approved, with the David Savio Law Enforcement Scholarship and the Arthur L. Spencer Scholarship awarded to deserving seniors. These votes marked the end of the session.
