The shift to departmentalization was prompted by the addition of a third fifth-grade section, necessitating a more structured approach compared to the previous model where subjects like science and social studies were shared among teachers. The program aims to develop teachers as content area specialists, providing differentiated instruction and better support for students’ diverse needs.

Miss Gomez emphasized the importance of student well-being, noting that having more teachers involved allows for closer monitoring of students’ academic and emotional issues. The transitions between classes also serve as natural breaks for students. The planning for this initiative began last summer, including visits to other schools to observe their departmentalization models. The proposed model involves one teacher handling math, another taking on reading, and a third focusing on writing and word study, while each teacher will continue to teach science and social studies to their homerooms. Students will be grouped by color for major subjects, facilitating social interaction and friendship-building outside their homerooms.

The board members responded positively to the presentation, with some expressing appreciation for the innovative approach and the passion of the teachers involved. Two students received special recognition for their achievements: Matthew Park, a senior, earned a group two second-place award for the second consecutive year, and Yedji Kim, another senior, achieved a second-place finish in the entire county. The audience expressed appreciation for the students’ hard work and commitment to excellence in mathematics, applauding their achievements.

In addition to these presentations, the board discussed various school activities and achievements, noting that the boys’ tennis team had secured a bye in the first round of the state tournament. The meeting coincided with AP testing, with results expected in early July. Upcoming events include a sophomore semiformal, senior prom, junior prom, and athletic and academic awards ceremonies in early June. Final exams were scheduled for June 17 to 20.

The board acknowledged a scholarship established by graduates of Glen Rock to encourage entrepreneurial spirit among students. They also noted a generous anonymous donation of $15,000 intended to support student trips, highlighting community involvement and support for educational needs.
