Hainesport Town Council Debates Inclusivity Survey Amidst Broader Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
During a recent Hainesport Town Council meeting, attention was given to a proposed inclusivity survey aimed at assessing the representation of various demographic groups on township boards and committees, alongside discussions on public safety, sustainability initiatives, and infrastructure improvements. The council also addressed ongoing vehicle thefts and traffic issues, while celebrating the success of community events and fundraising efforts.
The council’s deliberations over an inclusivity survey sparked discussions, with members divided on the potential impact of the survey results. Concerns were raised that disseminating negative feedback could misrepresent the town’s efforts to engage with its sizable minority population. One council member emphasized the necessity of proactive outreach to encourage participation from diverse communities, asserting that volunteers from these backgrounds would not naturally emerge without encouragement. This member argued, “somebody needs to reach out a hand,” highlighting the challenges in achieving representation. The debate included contrasting opinions on whether the survey could serve as a tool for improvement or risk casting Hainesport in a negative light.
Parallel to the survey discussions, the meeting touched on other sustainability initiatives not yet approved, including proposals to make the town more solar-friendly and to implement a tobacco-free building policy. The feasibility and timing of passing resolutions to meet certification requirements were discussed, particularly as the town faces a deadline for points submission. The current tobacco policy, which permits designated smoking areas near municipal buildings, was scrutinized, with a call to formalize a tobacco-free policy to align with the criteria for Sustainable Jersey certification.
Public safety was a prominent topic, with Sergeant Antinucci reporting ongoing vehicle thefts in the area. Despite recent arrests, the suspects were juveniles and released, posing a continued challenge for law enforcement. Antinucci urged residents to prevent thefts by not leaving key fobs in their cars. Additionally, Trooper Bowman’s efforts to curb traffic violations on Eastn Way were noted, with continued monitoring and potential road reconstruction under consideration to address speeding and stop sign infractions.
Infrastructure improvements were also on the agenda, with the introduction of Resolution 2025-113-7 to submit a grant application for resurfacing Patriot Way. The resolution passed unanimously. Further, a grant application correction for the HIKA redevelopment site was approved, highlighting the council’s focus on ensuring accurate and effective use of resources.
Leven underscored the ongoing needs of the firehouse and advocated for regular fundraising to alleviate taxpayer burdens. Another resident, Joe Souli, voiced concerns about global agendas influencing local health policies, cautioning against potential overreach.
Affordable housing was addressed by Samantha Loveman, who noted the construction of 72 new units on her street, stressing the importance of balancing development to meet state obligations without overcrowding neighborhoods. The council acknowledged these concerns.
The meeting also celebrated local achievements, including the recognition of Shawn Bozart for his 30 years of service to the fire company, and the success of recreational programs such as the summer tennis lessons and concert series. The council recognized the efforts of local businesses and organizations in supporting community events.
