- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Old Tappan Borough Council meeting, traffic concerns, a contentious parking ordinance, and the future of the Oaks Park House took center stage.
Traffic safety on Howard Drive emerged as a top priority for the council, following residents’ concerns about speeding cars and dangerous intersections. Two residents called for measures including a crosswalk, speed bumps, or even a traffic study. Councilman Jin Yhu proposed a study in collaboration with the police chief to determine the most effective solutions. Meanwhile, Mayor John M. Kramer reassured residents, promising to work with the police chief to address these issues.
The council also grappled with a parking ordinance that has sparked some opposition. The proposed ordinance, which would restrict parking to one side of the street, particularly during school events, has seen pushback from residents who fear it could disrupt normal residential parking. Councilman Thomas Gallagher emphasized the importance of safety, noting the challenges faced by emergency vehicles when cars are parked on both sides of the street. The council considered a residential pass system to allow locals to park during restricted times, but no final decision on the ordinance was made during the meeting.
Mayor Kramer’s emphasis on safety was met with support from other council members. They agreed that while such restrictions might inconvenience residents, the primary concern should be to prevent potential accidents.
In addition to traffic and parking concerns, the council broached the subject of the Oaks Park House’s future. They contemplated the use of Green Acres grant money for its renovation or replacement. While Councilman Binaghi was in favor of demolition and reconstruction, others voiced confusion about the intended use of the property and the constraints set by Green Acres. The council decided to await further parameters from Green Acres before advancing with the plan.
The council meeting also saw discussions on the enforcement of party-related ordinances during school events, updates on recreation, and reports on police activity. The police department was commended for increased presence at schools, and Detective Sergeant Chuck Di Maria received praise for his work on organized retail crime cases.
The meeting concluded with the council recognizing the efforts of the Department of Public Works in clearing streets of fallen leaves and acknowledging the election of Councilwoman Christine Massaro. Councilman Gallagher humorously mentioned the possibility of a coup during the upcoming reorganization meeting.
