Brick Township Allocates Funds for Public Safety and Infrastructure Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Brick Town Council meeting, several resolutions were passed, focusing on public safety enhancements and infrastructure projects. The council approved a multi-million dollar budget for body-worn cameras for police, a new EMS ambulance, and various community development grants. Public comments highlighted ongoing environmental concerns due to pollution from the Garden State Parkway, urging action to protect residents’ health.
A prominent item on the agenda was the council’s decision to award a contract for body-worn cameras to Motorola Solutions. The contract, valued at $375,417, will provide 136 cameras for the Brick Police Department. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and accountability within the police force. Partial funding for this expenditure will be sourced from a grant. During the public comment period, a resident inquired about the allocation of the cameras. It was clarified that while Brick has 148 sworn officers, the cameras will mainly be assigned to patrol officers, excluding command staff who rarely engage in direct public interactions.
Additionally, the council approved the purchase of a new ambulance for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS), funded through opioid settlement funds. The ambulance, costing $333,014, will bolster the township’s emergency response capabilities.
The meeting also saw the approval of several infrastructure-related resolutions. Among these was the insertion of a Community Development Block Grant amounting to $290,827. This grant aims to support housing repairs for low-income seniors and fund nonprofit organizations within the township. The council also sanctioned a $45,000 grant for rehabilitating the Winward Beach Playground, specifically targeting the replacement of its safety surface to ensure the facility’s ongoing safety and usability.
Moreover, the council authorized the solicitation of bids for the Swan Point roadway resurfacing project. This project, which involves several streets, is part of the township’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve local infrastructure.
A notable public comment came from a resident who raised concerns about environmental issues attributed to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority Commission. The resident articulated that the pollution from the Garden State Parkway was causing significant health issues for Brick residents, including lung diseases and cancers. He advocated for the installation of sound walls and increased foliage around key areas in Brick to mitigate these effects. The council acknowledged these concerns, which have been ongoing for over 13 years, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts with state authorities to address them.
The meeting proceeded with routine financial matters, including the approval of computer and manual bill resolutions. The computer bill resolution totaled $553,56.54, while the manual bill resolution involved a larger sum of $2,118,342.88. Both resolutions passed without questions from the council or the public.
Mayor Lisa Crate also proclaimed October 19th through October 25th, 2025, as National Friends of the Library Week in Brick Township. This proclamation was part of an effort to recognize and appreciate the contributions of the Friends of the Brick Library, a volunteer group dedicated to supporting library programs through fundraising activities. The mayor highlighted the critical role libraries play in the community and encouraged continued support for library initiatives.
The meeting concluded with announcements of upcoming community events. Mayor Crate expressed her gratitude to St. Paul’s Church for hosting her at the blessing of the animals event and promoted several forthcoming activities, including a “Walk to School Day” and a craft fair. She also highlighted a major Fall Fest event featuring various attractions like food trucks and a cornhole tournament. The mayor encouraged community participation, noting these events as excellent opportunities for residents to engage and celebrate together.
