Elmwood Park Council Celebrates Heroic Firefighters and Tackles Community Safety Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Elmwood Park Borough Council meeting, the council celebrated the bravery of local firefighters with service awards and discussed several community safety initiatives. The meeting also included a presentation on the Safe Sleep Box initiative, intended to aid expectant parents, and a discussion on social media threats against a council member.
The meeting’s central topic was the recognition of the Elmwood Park Fire Department’s heroic actions. Firefighters were honored for their bravery in various incidents, including a daring rescue at Dundy Dam in June 2023, where firefighters William Shadwell and Ryan Tomesco, along with Garfield firefighter Ken Robertson, saved construction workers and a fellow firefighter swept over the falls. This operation earned them life-saving awards. Another notable incident was a motor vehicle accident in May 2024, where multiple fire companies, including Ex-Chief Michael Presler and Lieutenant Joe Cunns, successfully extricated a victim from an overturned vehicle, garnering further commendations.
Firefighter Melissa Manorino received special recognition for a life-saving rescue during a June 2024 townhouse fire. Her courageous actions earned her a Class 3 rescue award and acknowledgment from the South Bergen Chiefs Association. Another heroic effort involved Firefighter Ziggywasniaak and civilian Derek Bruno, who were recognized for saving a man hanging from a roof by performing CPR until emergency services arrived.
This program provides expectant parents with safe sleep boxes filled with essentials like swaddles and educational materials, alongside classes on safe sleep practices and infant CPR. The initiative, funded by a grant from the Elks Grand Lodge, aims to promote infant safety and wellness, with boxes available in both Spanish and English to ensure broad accessibility.
Council members and residents expressed deep appreciation for the Elks’ contributions, highlighting the emotional and practical impact of the initiative. One council member shared a notable personal connection to the cause. The council praised the Elks for their dedication to community issues, noting their role in providing reassurance to new parents.
Moving to formal agenda items, the council addressed several ordinances aimed at improving community safety and efficiency. Resolution R-306-25 proposed amendments to streamline towing license distribution, addressing congestion at the clerk’s office. Resolution R-307-25 allowed Parkway Lanes to expand its operations by adding amusement games. Resolution R-308-25 focused on regulating electric scooters to address safety concerns, while Resolution R-309-25 introduced a stop intersection on Van Riper Avenue to improve traffic safety. Resolution R-310-25 sought to tighten construction zone traffic controls to minimize resident disruptions.
The council also tackled parking regulations, with Resolution R-311-25 addressing temporary parking restrictions on 16th Avenue due to school construction, and Resolution R-312-25 focusing on stopping or standing prohibitions near a bridge on Molnar Drive to improve access for residents.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to addressing recent social media threats against a council member. A member recounted distress over harmful online comments, expressing concern for their personal safety. The council acknowledged the seriousness of the threats, emphasizing the need for unity in condemning aggressive discourse.
Community engagement was a recurring theme, with council members urging residents to vote in the upcoming election and commending local candidates for their willingness to run for office. Updates from the recreation department included open registration for basketball and a pro wrestling event fundraiser. The council also planned a community day event and a free rabies clinic.
The public comment section included a discussion on the validity of past resolutions, with residents seeking clarity on their enforcement. The meeting concluded with a shift back to procedural matters and a call for adjournment, following a dynamic exchange of concerns and initiatives.
