The analysis showed that for fifth-grade ELA, 49.2% of students met or exceeded expectations, falling 3.8% below the state average. Eighth-grade ELA results were more concerning, with only 46.4% meeting or exceeding expectations compared to the state’s 57.1%.

The presentation also covered high school NJSLA results, noting a disparity between fall and spring performances. In the fall, 54.3% of high school students met or exceeded expectations, surpassing the state average of 52.2%. However, spring results showed a decline, with only 30.7% reaching the benchmark, below the 49.9% state average. This data illustrates the variability in student achievement and highlights areas for targeted intervention.

A key component of the meeting was the analysis of demographic disparities in testing outcomes. The data showed that in ELA, 77.3% of Asian students met or exceeded expectations, while only 29.8% of Black students and 33.6% of Hispanic students did the same. These disparities raise critical questions about equity and the effectiveness of current instructional strategies for diverse student groups.

Further analysis of subgroup performance revealed that only 31.8% of students receiving free and reduced lunch met or exceeded expectations, while figures were even lower for multilingual learners and special education students, at 4.3% and 10.7%, respectively. General education students, in contrast, had a 57.9% success rate. This data underscores the need for tailored support to elevate underperforming groups.

The meeting also addressed the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA), which all 11th-grade students must take to qualify for alternate graduation pathways. While ELA results showed Manchester students performing on par with state averages, math scores lagged behind. The Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessment results were also discussed, highlighting that 75% of grade 11 students with significant cognitive disabilities met targets in ELA and math.

In response to these findings, the district proposed several instructional enhancements. One initiative is a district-wide math model aimed at fostering active engagement and critical thinking. Professional development sessions focusing on sheltered instruction and the science of reading were identified as essential for equipping teachers with effective strategies. The importance of data-driven instruction was reiterated, with plans to continue using assessment committees to analyze performance outcomes and guide curriculum adjustments.

Future steps outlined during the meeting include evaluating instructional tools, focusing on vocabulary instruction, and ensuring continuity in supporting all students. There is a concerted effort to address identified achievement gaps through ongoing data analysis and professional development. Additionally, resources for families regarding graduation assessment requirements and testing information were made available to support student success.
