Passaic County Celebrates Award-Winning Parks and Plans Future Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
In their final meeting of 2025, the Passaic County Board of Commissioners celebrated a year of achievements, highlighted by the Parks and Recreation Department’s recognition for maintaining the Dundy Island field, which received the 2025 Field of Distinction award. The meeting also unveiled plans for significant future projects, including an expansion of health services and investments in historical sites.
The meeting commenced with a presentation by Parks and Recreation Director Daryl Sparta, who detailed the challenges faced in maintaining the Dundy Island field in Paterson, susceptible to flooding due to its location near the Passaic River. Sparta commended the field maintenance team, led by Vinnie Spano, for treating the field with agronomic precision akin to a golf course. Their efforts resulted in the Dundy Island field earning the prestigious 2025 Field of Distinction award from the Sports Field Managers Association of New Jersey. The board members applauded the Parks Department’s dedication and the collaborative support from county officials in securing resources for such projects.
The meeting also highlighted the county’s financial strength, with Moody’s maintaining the highest credit rating in its history. This fiscal health has facilitated various projects, including the Liberty of Pompton Lakes affordable housing initiative for seniors and veterans, scheduled to open in 2026. The county is preparing to open the waiting list for this project mid-next year, outlining eligibility criteria to ensure those in need can benefit from this initiative.
In response to the federal government shutdown, the county organized emergency food distribution events to support the 81,000 SNAP recipients affected. Director Arty Kakar of the Human Services Department led these efforts. The “County Move” program was also noted for its success, having served over 38,000 users with transportation services. Plans to expand this program into more municipalities were discussed, contingent on securing additional grant funding.
Significant investments in historical sites were another focal point. The transformation of the Skyler Kfax House into the County Military Heritage Museum is ongoing, with an opening planned next year. The board also announced plans for the Vanderhof Westerfelt House to become a literary and cultural center, in collaboration with Word Seed, Inc. Additionally, Lambert Castle is undergoing renovations to become a world-class museum, with a soft opening anticipated in January.
Enhancements in public health services were discussed, with the upcoming opening of a West Milford satellite office. This facility will function as a public health office, a mental health and addiction services clinic, and a nutrition site for seniors.
The meeting concluded with acknowledgments of departing Commissioners for their 21 years of service, with gratitude expressed for their leadership and contributions. The transition to new Commissioners was marked by a welcome and a symbolic clap-out event for the departing officials.
