Norfolk County Approves Key Reallocation for School Greenhouse Project Amid Financial Updates
- Meeting Overview:
During the Norfolk Board of County Commissioners meeting on December 17, 2025, a decision was made to reallocate $355,000 in previously approved capital spending for school improvements towards a new greenhouse project. This reallocation, requested by local schools and partially funded by a $100,000 earmark from the general court, aims to redirect funds initially intended for an electric passenger van, window replacements, and campus lighting. The motion to approve this reallocation was passed unanimously.
Additionally, the board engaged in a discussion about the procurement and awarding of contracts to Habib Associates for conducting maintenance studies on the HVAC systems across three courthouses: Brooklyn, Stone, and Renom. These studies aim to evaluate the feasibility of upgrading to a building management system, with the potential for significant cost implications as highlighted by a previous installation that cost around $800,000. The contract with Habib Associates was approved, despite the existing house doctor contract nearing its financial cap, with adjustments anticipated by April.
A noteworthy item on the agenda was the authorization for Eversource Energy to erect utility poles on county-owned land on North Street. This motion was passed with unanimous consent.
The meeting also introduced Kevin Mason, the county’s newly hired carpenter, who brings over four decades of experience and an affiliation with the Boston Carpenters Union. Mason expressed his enthusiasm and readiness to assume his responsibilities, following the retirement of his predecessor, Joe, who was commended for his contributions.
Personnel matters were addressed, including the appointment of Timothy Tetr as an instructor at North County Paracultural High School and the approval of a group notice of resignation for several individuals in substitute or student labor roles. Additionally, a rate change for Kayla Collins, a student laborer, was approved. The board also accepted the resignation of Michael Klet Jr. as a seasonal associate at the Walston Recreational Facility.
Financial oversight continued with the endorsement of payroll and expense warrants, including payroll sums of $143,988.9 and $34,318.54, as well as an expense approval for $687,529.34. The board proceeded to outline the Commissioner’s calendar for 2026, scheduling quarterly meetings in April, June, September, and December, which were unanimously approved.
Director Cronin presented a comprehensive county financial report. However, certain facilities were identified as stress points requiring monitoring. The director also relayed a legal directive concerning a legal services bill and reminded attendees of upcoming state ethics commission filings due in May. An ongoing RSVP drive for veterans’ support materials was also highlighted.
