Bridgewater-Raritan School Board Faces Heated Debate Over Meeting Frequency and Community Involvement
- Meeting Overview:
The Bridgewater-Raritan School Board deliberated on several issues, with the most contentious being the proposed reduction in the frequency of board meetings. Other topics included the election of new board leadership and representatives, as well as public commentary on district policies and governance.
The debate over the meeting calendar was a focal point of the session, with board members divided on the proposal to reduce the number of meetings in the 2024-2025 school year. They emphasized the necessity of timely gatherings to plan for retreats and events, advocating for more frequent opportunities for community engagement. The member stated, “I have opposed reducing this meeting frequency then, and I continue to oppose reducing the meeting frequency now.”
Another board member criticized the timing of the proposal. This led to a back-and-forth about past instances where similar tactics were used regarding resolutions. The discussion also touched on the potential impact on student outcomes, with some members arguing that fewer meetings could hinder community representation and oversight, especially given the busy year ahead with changes such as the introduction of full-day kindergarten.
Contrasting views emerged, with one member suggesting that the proposed calendar could relieve some administrative burdens, allowing for more focus on running schools rather than preparing for frequent meetings. They proposed approving the calendar as is, with the possibility of future adjustments. A suggestion was made to schedule retreats and send out potential dates to avoid conflicts, noting that it is easier to cancel a meeting than to add one.
As the session continued, a motion was made to postpone the calendar decision to a special meeting on January 9, 2026, to allow for more thorough deliberation. This motion failed, leading to a direct discussion and eventual vote on the calendar resolution.
In addition to the calendar discussion, the board saw the election of new leadership. Mike Pepe was elected as the new board president following a procedural debate over the nomination process. Despite concerns about the validity of the vote expressed by Dr. Lee, Mr. Pepe was confirmed as president and pledged to foster a productive year. A subsequent election saw Mrs. Asuna confirmed as vice president, although Dr. Lee abstained from the vote due to a lack of clarity on the candidate’s platform.
The board also appointed representatives to various educational service roles. Mr. Walker was elected as the primary delegate to the Somerset County Educational Services Commission, with Dr. Lee serving as the alternate. Mrs. Lockran was chosen as the delegate to the New Jersey School Board Association’s Delegate Assembly, with Mr. Singer as the alternate. Additionally, Mr. Singer and Mr. Maloney were appointed as joint liaisons to the Township of Bridgewater, while another member was unanimously elected as the liaison to the Borough of Raritan.
Public comments added further depth to the meeting’s agenda. Laura Crest, president of the Bridgewater-Raritan Education Association, congratulated Mr. Singer on his reelection and expressed hopes for a calmer year. JP Levin, a community member, raised concerns about decision-making processes, urging the board to prioritize the district’s interests over personal preferences. A contentious exchange followed between Levin and Superintendent Robert Beers, regarding an incident involving political signs.
Margarita Yosi Fakis, a resident, addressed the board on the district’s policy on exchange students, criticizing the refusal to allow such students and comparing it to neighboring districts that welcome them. She argued for the benefits exchange students could bring to the community and offered to assist the board in reconsidering its stance.
