Pleasantville City Council Unveils Developments and Elects New Leadership
- Meeting Overview:
At the Pleasantville City Council meeting on January 5, 2026, developments were announced, including the transformation of the former Greyhound bus terminal and new residential projects, alongside the election of Councilwoman Carla Thomas as council president. The council also addressed several resolutions, appointments, and budgetary measures.
One of the most notable announcements was the planned redevelopment of the former Greyhound bus terminal on Route 9, which is set to become a facility for the New Jersey American Water Company. This transformation is expected to enhance local infrastructure and provide a modern utility hub for residents. Additionally, a property adjacent to the Pleasantville Recreation Center, located at the intersection of Brighton Avenue and Route 9, will be developed into townhomes. This development aims to meet the growing residential demand in the area, providing more housing options for the community.
Further urban planning efforts include the introduction of four-way stops with painted crosswalks on Franklin Boulevard, intended to improve pedestrian safety and traffic management. On Rididgewood Avenue, a new hardware store will replace a long-standing unfinished property, addressing community concerns over the site’s previous state.
The council meeting also featured the swearing-in of newly elected council members Victor Carmona and James Barclay. Councilwoman Carla Thomas was elected as the new council president, a decision met with unanimous approval and applause. This leadership change sets a new direction for the council, with expectations for collaborative governance and effective decision-making.
Mayor Judy M. Ward highlighted the city’s financial health in her remarks, noting an assessed valuation of 792 billion and a tax collection rate of 99.15%, which she described as “excellent.” She expressed optimism about potential relief from healthcare costs through upcoming legislative efforts, which would ease a budgetary burden on the city. The Mayor also acknowledged the dedication of city employees and volunteers, offering condolences to families of those who had passed away in the previous year.
In terms of departmental updates, the fire department, led by Chief Kevin Benegas, reported a successful junior cadet camp designed to recruit future firefighters. The department also delivered a baby and continued its annual traditions, such as distributing coats and toys through Operation Warm. The police department, under Chief Stacy Schlacker, engaged in community outreach, taking children on shopping trips and organizing holiday events. They also enhanced their operational capabilities with new technology, issuing 3,235 summonses and responding to 4,832 calls for service as of November.
The Recreation Department celebrated the grand opening of Lakes Bay Unity Park, which received an award for being the best project from the New Jersey League of Municipalities. This park features various summer activities and has been well-received by the community. Summer sports programs saw robust participation, particularly in softball and soccer, reflecting strong community engagement.
During the meeting, several appointments and resolutions were approved. A business administrator and a chief financial officer were successfully appointed, filling leadership positions that had been vacant. Resolution four addressed the schedule of meetings for 2026, while resolution five established the city’s website and the Press of Atlantic City as official public notice locations. Both resolutions received unanimous support.
Resolution six, designating the cash management plan for 2026, and resolutions seven through twelve, involving appointments to various advisory boards and positions, were also approved unanimously. These appointments include members of the Senior Citizens Advisory Board, the Economic Development, Tourism, and Special Event Advisory Committee, and the Pleasantville Housing Authority. Resolution fourteen authorized the temporary budget for current operations, while resolution fifteen addressed the temporary budget for the sewer fund, both passing without dissent.
In the public portion of the meeting, a resident expressed their wishes for a happy new year and congratulated the newly sworn-in council members. They urged the administration and council to continue working collaboratively for positive outcomes in the community. The Mayor and council members echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the importance of community support and collaboration in advancing the city’s initiatives.
