Morris Plains Borough Council Approves Affordable Housing Plan Amid Centennial Celebrations
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Morris Plains Borough Council meeting, the approval of a plan to develop 20 affordable housing units emerged as a focal point, alongside preparations for the borough’s upcoming centennial celebrations. The council also addressed infrastructure improvements and public safety enhancements.
The meeting’s top priority was the council’s decision on affordable housing. The approved plan involves the creation of 20 affordable units, potentially leading to a total of 100 units, with the remaining 80 being market rate. This decision follows discussions on balancing the need for affordable housing with concerns about high-density developments. The council expressed gratitude to the committee and professionals involved in crafting the plan, which they consider an “absolute win for the borough.” Planned rezoning efforts, set to commence in early 2026, will target properties within the OB and C1 zones.
In addition to housing, the council highlighted significant public safety measures, including the introduction of three new officers to the Morris Plains Police Department and the establishment of a motorcycle unit to enhance traffic enforcement. Although a proposed new police facility was rejected by voters, plans are underway to revise the proposal for the current municipal building, with an architect approved to address departmental needs. The fire department reported improvements such as apartment inspections and the acquisition of new emergency response vehicles.
Infrastructure developments were another key topic, with completed walking paths along Route 53 and planned trails in Community Park aimed at improving accessibility and safety for residents. The playgrounds in various parks received upgrades, and discussions are ongoing regarding turf replacement in Simon’s Park. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to enhance recreational spaces for families in Morris Plains.
As the borough prepares for its centennial in 2026, the council is organizing a series of celebratory events, starting with a reenactment at the Borough School Auditorium on January 15th. The centennial committee has planned activities throughout the year, including a family birthday party at the community center and an adult gathering at the BFW, featuring local microbreweries and live music. Merchandise commemorating the anniversary will soon be available, and a mural is planned for the underpass leading into the town.
The council meeting also addressed financial updates, noting a 2.75% increase in the borough’s ratables compared to 2024, which will influence future budgeting and planning. The business development committee reported on the installation of decorative tree lights in the business district and announced a networking event to support local businesses.
In other council matters, the meeting included the nomination and approval of Art Bruhn, Jr. as council president for the upcoming year, along with the appointment of various board and commission members. Resolutions 2026-1 through 2026-28 were adopted, and the fire department recognized officials for their service. Chris Shay was congratulated on his 11th term as fire prevention official, while volunteer firefighters John Budro and Michael Shay received the Morris Plains Community Service Award for their over 50 years of dedication.
The meeting concluded with community member Penny sharing anecdotes and expressing appreciation for the town and its residents, as she anticipates moving after over 50 years in Morris Plains. Penny also highlighted the importance of recycling, distributing materials from the Morris County Municipal Utility Authority to promote environmental stewardship.
