Brick Town Council Discusses Budget Adjustments and Purchases Amid Storm Recovery Efforts
- Meeting Overview:
The Brick Town Council meeting addressed a range of issues, from budget reallocations and significant vehicle purchases to community feedback on recent snowstorm responses.
One of the primary focuses of the meeting was a resolution authorizing budget transfers to reallocate funds for year-end adjustments. These transfers, which do not increase the overall municipal budget, were highlighted by a council member as necessary to align with fiscal requirements and address community needs efficiently. Additionally, the council approved a resolution to transfer $350,000 into the snow removal trust fund. This decision comes in the wake of recent severe winter weather, which posed significant challenges to the township’s infrastructure and public safety.
In line with enhancing public safety, the council authorized the purchase and delivery of eight 2026 Ford utility interceptor vehicles. This acquisition, totaling $356,390.40, is facilitated through the New Jersey cooperative purchasing program. These vehicles will bolster the township’s law enforcement capabilities, providing more robust resources for officers on duty.
The council also addressed several shared services agreements that aim to enhance collaboration with neighboring municipalities and county offices. An agreement with the Borough of Manalapan allows Brick Township code enforcement officers to address property maintenance violations on a part-time basis, with reimbursement provided for their services. Another agreement with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office for the Ocean County Narcotic Strike Force was approved, which focuses on combating gang-related issues and enforcing drug laws within the township. Officers assigned to this task force will receive a stipend, further supporting law enforcement efforts.
A resolution was introduced to seek proposals for a five-year flood management plan, aligning with FEMA guidelines to reduce flood risk and enhance public safety.
In response to community concerns, the council discussed the recent snowstorm’s impact on Brick Township. Council members and the mayor commended the public works department for their tireless efforts in snow removal and road maintenance. The township had faced one of the largest storms in recent years, with nearly 800 miles of roads requiring attention. Preparations began even before the first snowflake fell. The council acknowledged the community’s cooperation and support during this challenging time, emphasizing the importance of neighborly assistance in clearing driveways and sidewalks.
The meeting also included a public comment segment where residents expressed various concerns about traffic safety and local developments. One resident raised issues about traffic on Lynwood Avenue, prompting the council to provide updates on recent traffic studies and safety improvements. Another resident suggested reconsidering snow removal regulations, particularly concerning sidewalk snow-clearing requirements, in light of the recent heavy snowfalls. The council expressed understanding of the challenges faced by residents and reiterated their focus on ensuring safe routes for schoolchildren.
Additionally, the council approved several resolutions related to community events and services. Bids were authorized for mobile ice cream vendors and food vendors during Summerfest events, along with bids for fireworks exhibitions. The combination of fireworks and alcohol sales prompted a discussion on safety considerations.
The meeting concluded with recognition of the promotion of two police officers, Lieutenant Keith Prrenville and Sergeant Matthew Caner. The council and Mayor Crate congratulated the officers on their new roles, acknowledging their contributions to the department and the community.
