Somerset Hills School Board Explores Security Upgrades, Recognizes Student Achievements, and Discusses Policy Changes
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Somerset Hills School Board addressed topics such as proposed security system upgrades across district schools, celebrated student achievements in music and artificial intelligence, and discussed upcoming policy changes, including those related to cell phone use and school meeting notifications.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on the proposed upgrade of paging, door access, and panic systems, which have been operational since 2007. The middle school is prioritized for these upgrades, with a projected budget of $1.725 million, of which $440,000 is earmarked for the middle school. The proposed system aims to streamline operations and enhance security by allowing administrators to control measures remotely. The board is considering various financing options, including capital reserves and lease purchase agreements, with potential funding from a forthcoming referendum. However, some dissent was noted regarding the timing and cost of these upgrades, as they were not part of the previously reviewed referendum.
In a show of recognition, the board honored several students for their achievements. Ella Hunter was commended for her acceptance into the Central Jersey Music Educators Association Intermediate Honors Choir. Although her fellow honoree, Poppy Picket, was unable to attend due to a basketball game, their upcoming performance at Monroe Township High School was highlighted as an achievement. Additionally, Ria Lewis was recognized for receiving a global silver award in the World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth. Her project, Bridgebot, aims to address cross-cultural misunderstandings.
The board also celebrated Bernard’s High School’s inclusion on the 2025 AP Honor Roll, with a high percentage of seniors participating and excelling in AP exams. The board praised the school’s extensive offerings and the educators’ role in fostering critical skills. In a staff spotlight, Mr. Shane Porter was recognized for his engaging and impactful teaching philosophy at Burnersville Middle School, particularly his recent initiative involving a congressional simulation with eighth-grade students.
Policy discussions were a key focus, with particular attention given to cell phone use during school hours. Concerns about health implications linked to specific apps, like blood sugar readers, prompted proposals for exemptions. The current policy was deemed acceptable by students, though they expressed a desire for greater access to the Genesis system. In response to upcoming policy changes, a phone-free day is scheduled for Bernard’s High School, with more planned for the spring.
The board also reviewed new public meeting notification requirements, effective March 1st, which will shift notifications online, reducing the need for newspaper advertisements. This change, aimed at improving transparency, was among various administrative updates shared during the meeting.
The education community was further engaged with updates on several initiatives, including the “Battle of the Books” event at Bedwell and the middle school’s successful sock donation drive. Students from Bernardsville Middle School presented on various extracurricular activities, such as the wrestling team’s growth and the Earth Science team’s competitive success. High school representatives provided updates on winter sports achievements and upcoming musical performances, highlighting the vibrant student life within the district.
Public comments introduced concerns from a resident, Sylvia Gills, who questioned the board’s past decisions and voiced frustration over legal and financial implications for the community. Her remarks underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in board operations.
