Warren School Board Confronts Anti-Semitism Incident and Plans Security Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Warren School Board meeting addressed the discovery of a swastika in a middle school bathroom, prompting discussions on anti-Semitism and related educational strategies. Additionally, the board announced several security upgrades and acknowledged the retirement of long-serving staff members.
In a and sensitive issue, the board confronted an incident involving a swastika found in a middle school bathroom in December. This discovery raised concerns about anti-Semitism within the community. In response, a meeting was held with Rabbi Greenbound and Mr. Michael Lindy from Temple Har Shalom to discuss strategies for addressing anti-Semitism. This collaboration aimed to not only respond to the incident but to foster understanding and a sense of belonging within the schools. Dr. Matthew Mingle, Superintendent of Schools, highlighted the importance of utilizing professional resources to support staff development and future curriculum discussions, particularly in social studies, to combat prejudice effectively.
Security was another key topic of discussion. The administration outlined plans related to projects from the March 2025 referendum, which include significant security upgrades across school buildings. These improvements encompass the installation of external strobe lights, replacement of public address systems, security camera upgrades, and interior door replacements with electronic locking systems. To date, nearly 200 security cameras have been replaced in school facilities. Additionally, the construction of a security vestibule at Warren Middle School is anticipated to occur in summer 2027. These measures are part of a broader effort to enhance the school community’s culture and maintain or improve New Jersey school climate improvement scores related to physical security and belonging.
Further, the referendum includes playground replacements at each elementary school. The design process for these playgrounds is being led by students through a voting process to ensure their input, fostering a sense of belonging and community involvement. This initiative aligns with the district’s strategic goal to create a supportive school climate.
The board also discussed the formation of a committee focused on strengthening mental health and wellness supports, which will guide the assessment of current mental health resources and partnerships. This committee will develop a multi-year action plan based on a comprehensive needs assessment, with a particular focus on collaboration with Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC).
In addition to these security and wellness initiatives, the meeting included the approval of six retirements, acknowledging the extensive service of staff members. Retirees such as Laura Lamson, Denine Albani, and Susan Jackson were recognized for their 31 years of dedication, while others like Noel Perne and Kathleen Erskin were appreciated for their contributions. The board expressed gratitude for their service and impact on the school community.
The board also reviewed the district’s strategic plan, which focuses on enhancing student learning, ensuring student and staff well-being, and planning for growth amid increasing enrollment. The strategic plan’s first goal emphasizes elevating academic rigor and engagement. This includes a commitment to staff capacity-building to analyze student performance data and make timely educational adjustments. The second goal centers on personalized learning and providing comprehensive support, introducing the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model. This model aims to address students’ needs effectively, particularly for English language learners.
Planning for enrollment growth and space needs was another priority discussed. A community committee comprising about 20 members, including staff, administrators, and community representatives, has been established to evaluate current enrollment trends and the capacity of existing facilities. They have conducted facility tours, assessed space requirements, and reviewed historical approaches to managing space issues. An updated demographic study has been commissioned and is publicly available, offering insights from planning for growth meetings.
The meeting also highlighted Warren Middle School’s application for the 2026 School of Character program, which received an honorable mention. The evaluation identified strengths in social-emotional learning, staff collaboration, and character education integration, while also providing actionable recommendations for future submissions.
Finally, the board conducted its annual review of established communication norms, expressing satisfaction with their effectiveness, while committee reports addressed digital access, device management, and preparations for the 2026-27 budget amid rising healthcare costs. The personnel negotiations and communications committee focused on reviewing non-aligned staff compensation, conducting the superintendent evaluation process, and enhancing community engagement, particularly with kindergarten registration.
