Pasco County Planning Commission Considers Traffic Solutions and Mixed-Use Zoning
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Pasco County Planning Commission meeting focused on community concerns about transportation and zoning, including a proposal to improve bus pass accessibility and a call for dedicated mixed-use zoning areas. Several zoning amendments were also reviewed, with some continued to future meetings.
During the meeting, a local resident, Lucas Miller, raised traffic concerns in the Wesley Chapel area, attributing part of the problem to the cumbersome process of obtaining bus passes. Miller suggested the implementation of an online portal to streamline the acquisition process, allowing residents to download bus passes directly to their phones. This idea was acknowledged as a good one, but the commission advised Miller to present his proposal to the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), which oversees transit operations in Pasco County. The MPO meetings provide a platform where transit agency representatives can consider such suggestions.
Furthermore, Miller proposed the establishment of a dedicated mixed-use zoning category. He argued that the current process, which relies on master planned unit developments (MPUDs), is inefficient. A dedicated zoning classification could facilitate increased density and align with the recommendations of the Affordable Housing Commission by promoting diverse and affordable housing options.
The commission also addressed several zoning amendments, with most items on the agenda either continued to future meetings or approved without objections. Notably, the request to change zoning from an Agricultural District to a Master Planned Unit Development (MPUD) to allow for 31 single-family units was continued to March 2026.
